RE: Bike Path on Fishers Island
Further to your request, the Commission reviewed the Fishers Island Recreational Path
Foundation's plans to construct and maintain a public recreational path on the island. We very
much support this endeavor.
Unfortunately, there are no current funds available for this project. The island was offered an
opportunity to participate in the "Seaview Trails of the North Fork" project with the Department
of Transportation in 1997 but chose not to do so at that time.
Nevertheless, there is one opportunity available to Fishers Island. Under the Long Island
Transportation Plan to Manage Congestion (LITP 2000), funding is available to implement
"traffic calming" and bicycle and pedestrian safety capital projects. I am enclosing the information
on application requirements. Please note that the submission deadline is 4:00 PM on Friday
December 21.
