Further to the Town Board's request, the Commission called for a November 16 meeting of all
business people in the area adjacent to Locust Lane. The following bus'messes were represented:
Mullen Motors, Roping Roy's and 7-11 of Southold. In addition, two private individuals who
live on and had communicated with the Town regarding Locust Lane traffic problems were
present also: Mrs. Jean Sanford and Mrs. Nancy Orientale as well as Town Planner Scopaz,
Police Chief Cochran and Chairman Brashich.
The discussion, sometimes heated, covered a number of issues, i.e., truck parking on Locust Lane
while visiting 7-11; number and size of trucks traveling over Locust Lane; Locust Lane being
used as a turning site for Canadian lorries delivering Mullen Motor cars; need for a "local traffic
only" and/or "no thru traffic" signs at Main & Locust; possibility oftraffc light at Locust and/or
Boisseau as well as making Harbor Lane a two-way street. On their own, Mullen Motors had
monitored truck traffic in the area for a whole month. This information was shared with the
meeting participants.
At the conclusion of the meet'rog, following was agreed upon: Mrs. Orientale will video tape
traffic going north on Locust Lane for a period of several weeks and share that information with
the Commission; at a minimum "local traffic only" as well as "caution - children in area" will be
placed on four streets -- Main & Harbor Lane; Main & Locust Lane; Main & Cottage Place and
Main & Hobart Road; traffic light possibility will be raised again at forthcoming traffic study
meeting in Greenport on December 1; and, police would contact a number of local businesses
with respect to limiting their drivers parking trucks on Locust Lane while shopping at 7-11.
Another meeting would review the success of this strategy at a later date.
RECOMMENDATION: The Commission recommends that the Town Board approve placing the
above two signs at the four locations at the earliest opportunity.

RE: LOCUST LANE TRAFFIC PROBLEM
Dear Mr. Brashich;
This letter is a request for a reselution to the traffic problems and concerns on Locust Lane, Southold.
I am aware that the Tow~ Board has suggested that Locust Lane be turned into a One Way, South
bound. As a resident of this neighborhood for hearty twenty-five years I know that One Way, So~th
bound traffic will not solve the Traffiic Problem on this street, it will only make it worse.
One of the main problems on Locust Lane is the huge amount of Tractor-Trailer TnJck traffic. Some
of it coming from Kom Road, turning northbound onto Locust. There is also a large amount of truck
traffic coming southbound, along with a high amount of everyday street traffic coming from the
Seven-Eleven convenience store.
If Locust Lane was to be a One Way Street, the truck traffic coming from Kom Road would be forced
to turn South onto Locust, down to L'Hommedieu, then North onto Town Harbor Lane, in order to access
the Main Road. This, I am sure, will enrage even more neighbom. A One Way will also force more
Seven-Eleven traffic to go South bound on this street because of the Locust Lane entrance/exit.
I believe that a Traffic Study should be done for this area. A One Way will not stop the Trucks from
coming down this road. I suggest that if the Town would prohibit Trucks ever a certain gross weight from
using these streets, it may help to alleviate the problem. Although, it would really be a good idea to
conduct a Traffic Study so that a proper solulion can be found.
Everyday, squealed fires and honking horns can be heard on locust Lane. It is only a matter of lime
before a serous accident occurs in this neighbon'mod. So I hope that a well planned, insightful miuflo~
that all the neighbom can live with is found very soon.

Local Traffic Concern
See attached letter regarding traffic behind the 7-Eleven in Southold. The Town Board
discussed the issue and thought making Locust Lane one-way (either way) might be
helpful. Or perhaps Mrs. Sanford's suggestion of No Thru Traffic (especially for trucks)
would be preferable.
Would your commission please consider these ideas and let us know your
recommendation. Thanks.

Dear Mr. Jacobs:
Thank you for talking with me last Friday (July 14th) about the traffic problems in our
neighborhood and for forwarding our concerns to town attorney, Greg Yakoboski. I
appreciate you addressing our neighborhood needs. '
As I've stated in previous letters, 7/Eleven traffic and patrons are entering and
disturbing the residential community. Also, many 7/Eleven patrons are not utilizing
the designated 7/Eleven entrances and exits and are disobeying the 7/Eleven "No
Parking Zone'. We understand that service trucks need to come into a neighborhood
when they are servicing a home. However, if they are only patronizing 7/Eleven,
they should not be using our neighborhood to detour back to the Main Road. Traffic
of this sort is unwarranted, dangerous and discourteous. The constant "fallout" from
this round the clock business is not fair to area residents.
Due to our traffic problems generated by the presence of 7/Eleven, we ask you Mr.
Jacobs together with town attorney, Greg Yakoboski to please post:
"Residential Area", "No Thru Traffic" signs near the head of Locust Lane to reduce
the intrusion of incessant 7/Eleven traffic. For best visibility, a good location would
be by the juniper bush buffer. This at least would inform people that a residential
community exists directly beyond 7/Eleven.
Thank you for your. attention to this important matter. Our neighborhood needs your
concern and supervision.
