Dear Mr. Patel:
Recently the Commission was made aware that the Long Island Rail Road may request
screen fencing over the new DOT bridge to be erected on NYS Route 25 in Greanport,
New York. The rail road usually asks for security fencing to prevent vandalism and
protect pedestrian foot traffic over a bridge.
Thc Town of Southold and thc Commission do not agree with this requirement should
such a decision be made for the following reasons:
· New York State Route 25 was designated a "Scenic Byway" by Governor Pataki
in December 2000. Hence, the look or aesthetics of the new bridge is a concern to
the Town.
· No sidewalk will be constructed, therefore, no pedestrian traffic.
· There is no history of problems at this location.
· The number of trains per day is limited and does not warrant security fencing.
The Commission would greatly appreciate your taking these points into consideration in
arriving at thc fight decision to wave the screen fencing requirement.
S~ncerely,
Chapman
