Re: CR 48, Middle Road ~ Tuckers Lane, Southold
Dear Mr. Brashich:
Pursuant to your request of September 20, 2004, the traffic investigation at the above location has been
completed. As part of the investigation, traffic accidents were analyzed, radar speed samples were obtained and
field observations were made.
The posted speed limit is 55 mph, while 85% speeds are 60 mph and 56 mph respectively for eastbound and
westbound directions. Average sPeeds were 54 mph and 51 mph respectively for eastbound and westbound,
while only two were vehicles recorded going over 65 mph, both in the eastbound direction.
There were four reported accidents from 2000 to Mamh 2003 (39 months). Two involved deer, one was a rear
end type accident and the fourth involved a vehicle turning fight from Tucker Lane onto CR 48, Middle Road, in
collision with an eastbound vehicle. Field observations revealed that the traffic on Tuckers Lane has adequate
sight distance to the east; however, a slight horizontal curve to the west somewhat restricts sight distance. This
Department plans to alleviate this situation by modifying the pavement-marking configuration this year.
If you have any questions or require additional information concerning this matter, contact either myself or
Robert J. Bomholdt, Director of Traffic Safety at 852-4085.
Very truly yours,
William Hillman, P.E.
