RE: CR 48, Middle P~oad, Mattituck
I am in rec~-I~f your letter of July 19, 2005 concerning various traffic issues on CR 48, Middle Road.
Based upon the Community Preservation Plan restriction for the prope~y at Cox Neck Road, we will
pursue the installation of a traffic signal for improved safety at this location.
The proposal for improved pedestrian access across (JR 48, Middle Road at Love Lane has safety issues.
Approximately 20,000 vehicles per day use this highway during the summer weekends and these volumes
will only grow larger. Therefore, it would be counter productive to the local economy to further restrict
travel by reducing the capacity of CR 48, Middle Road. Also, we do not encourage pedestrian crossings
at major highways such as this without traffic signal control. A safer solution might be to utilize the
traffic signal controlled intersection of CR 48, Middle Road at Wickham Avenue, which also has a
crosswalk. Pedestrians could then access the waterfront by going north on Wickham Avenue or walking
west to Maiden Lane or Love Lane and then walk north to the water.
If you have any questions or require additional information concerning this matter, contact either myself
or William Hillman, P.E., Chief Engineer of Highways/Waterways at 852-4002.
