HomeMy WebLinkAboutRoute 25Wednesday October 26, 2005 to: Transportation Commission from~ Jody Adams I found your recentmeeting interesting and informative. I am raising an issue which you may not feel is ~n~der your mandate . We have all suffered during the last two years in part, I feel, due to negligence by the Town police and the town government = in relation to becoming involved with the actions of the DOT and its hires. Apparently the DOY has chosen to make the length Of Route 25 starting in Orient and ending in Laurel a double yellow line No Passing zone. (Note: Iam~-~old there is one exception in East Marion). As a driver who at times is slow this has caused problems for me, other drivers and the police. I hope this is an issue your co,~mittee or commission might feel worthy of consideration. Additionally,.the speed limits ars changing and not espeaial]~y visible - and~possibly r~ot even safe. It was said at your meeting that Route 25 is a State Road as ii' that meant no one shoula attempt to change it. Our police police it and our residents plus others drive on it so its basic ownership is not especially relevant. I am dealing with police, psychological and financial problems resulting especially from policelng on this stretch in this Town. It is this that I think your committee possibly in conjtmction with the police committee should consider. When you have a two lane road of changing speed limits used by people desiring to do different speeds some catching a ferry, some going to work, a few trying to sight see - you do not have consistent movement. I was stopped for doing somewhere between thirty and forty on a Cutchogue, ~attituck stretch which may have had a 55 limit. I think this matter should be brought tolight before the police develop improper and wrongful use of laws that generally do not apply. This situation also does cause a great deal of lawbreaking some of which may be unsafe. In my opinion the Southold Town police have given up all normal traffic control (driving in rain without headlights, unecessary and obtrusive use of horns, bullying and other things which a well run co~aunity would not permit. The transition from no stop lights to the perhaps necessity of a suburban tral~fic sign situation may be difficult but its consideration is important in terms of safety. Additionally, haze and clouds seem to be much more prevalent in this area Also making driving less safe.
