Neboysha R. Brashich, Chairman
Bus Shelters
January l2, 2006
Under the direction of the former Supervisor, Joanne Liquori initiated a dialogue with the
Suffolk County Department of Public Works (DPW) regarding the acquisition of a number
of bus shelters within the Town of Southold during the course of last year. It is our
understanding that DPW funding is presently available for 6 shelters in Southold costing
$10-15,000 each. Supervisor Horton decided not to pursue this opportunity given that he
did not like the looks and configuration of this basic county bus shelter.
The Commission had not been involved in this process during this time. In December,
however, we were advised that Joaane's ides had been transferred to Jamb Richter and a
suggestion was made that the Commission should consider picking up the action to move
forward given this funding availability. We are also aware that both Southampton and
East Hampton have erected modified bus shelters (rural in appearance) at an additional
town cost of $10,000 each. Riverhead decided to erect a basic shelter in front of Central
Suffolk HospitaL
At its December meeting, the Commission reviewed this matter at length. Three issues were
· Esthetics of the shelters (utilitarian versus rural modification)
· Additional cost to the Town, including maintenance which would be Town
responsibility
· Easement issues since shelters need to be erected on private property
The Commission needs guidance as to how to proceed. Jamie and I would welcome the
opportunity to discuss this with you.
