Re: Transportation Commission
With regards to our conversation at this month's meeting of the Transportation
Commission and the topic of crosswalks, I plan on monitoring the safety of
pedestrian crosswalks as follows:
To await the re-painting and improved signage the New York State
Department of Transportation has promised will take place "as soon as their
work schedule permits".
To assign a detail of two to three officers to several of the heavier used
crosswalks to monitor their use and, where applicable, make stops of vehicles
that do not yield to pedestrians and educate the operators of the witnessed
violation of the Vehicle and Traffic Law. The officers may start with an
education process and then lead into the issuing of t_raffle summonses for
these violations. Officers will also be instructed to educate pedestrians in these
locations that do not use the duly marked crosswalks of the danger involved in
not doing so.
During the summer months when I have the use of Traffic Control Officers I
will attempt to periodically assign these officers to the higher volume
crosswalks to monitor their use and insure pedestrian safety.
ca Our goal will be compliance to the sections of the New York State Vehicle and
Traffic Law governing the use of Pedestrian Crosswalks.
