President Northfork Trolley Coropany, Inc. 1 6 ~ Tra~ler Watchman - Thursday, N. ovember 27, 2! BUSINESS Trolley Trippin' on the North Fork Thomas Ingald, above, hopes to introduce a trolley operation to the North Fork. Ingaid has bc~n working haxd on thc project for the past six months. Thc trol- leys he plans to use are styled after thc San Francisco cable ears, but without the rails. He sees the inlliai-operation -- winch he hopes to have nmnmg by the spring -- as four trolleys, runmng on three hour tours, which will allow cus- tomers to get off and remain in a town BY G,~RY P. JOYCE As the tomist season on the North Fork stowly wanes --just m time.fur it to restart again tn the spring -- residents £mally get used to havthg empty roads and receiving a modleur~ of courtesy from those behind the wheel. Although tourism and the crowds it brings does help get our busthesses through the sometimes drea- ry, always quiet winter months, tourism is essential to the North Fork's ~conomic 'dtality. One of the conun- drums facing town planners who have to s~tke a bal- ance between economics mad quality of life has always been how to get people onto thc North Fork without increasing the traffic. Thomas Ingald of Aquebogne thinks he may have "I was siring at the Chowder Pot Pub in Greenpog one dny," recalled lngain, an Aquebegue resident and 31-year veteran of the Suffolk County Police Department, "and I was watching ail these people get off the rtath in Greenpots. No cars, taxis, limos~ everyone was on foot, and it Nt me. How do they get around once they get here?" Ingald wondered how to do that without increasing traffic. That question resulted in thc idea for a t~olley service that would shuttle people from Riverhaad to Gteenport and back on a ragular hasis. His business plan thcludes selling the stops to var- ious businesses in R~verbead and Southold: He sees the nuraerous vineyards as prime locations and tlfinks · Home Loans 'H°me EqUitu L°ans -Refinancing · Construction Loans EAST 'Land AE/ 631-36§-6000 30 West Main St, Riverhead, NY ~1901 MORTG G until the next trolley comes by. Or, passengers can simply take a three-hour-tour of the North Fore The Orient Express trolley would make stops in all the town and hamlet centers, return on the North Road and then head back to Riverhaed, allowing pessengem on both kgs another alt£1nativ~ to moving ~btuad. ]ngald plans to speak to thc stato:about ini~fing a hub Whine West End drivers could ~ their v~liicles and avail themselves of the trolley. 'T~¢ EPCAL area would be ideal for a Noah Fork WelCOme Center," said lngald, "The parking wouldn't impact the already crowded parkin~ in the hamlets or anyone else's business parking. We would get cars off the mad, solve any future DWI problems, and thcrease pedestrian ~affie to the retail centers, hotels, winer- ies, and bed-and-breakfasts." ingald has spoken with Southold Town Supervisor Josh Horton, who said that any "innovative ideas to promote busthess while reducing traffic are well worth conaidermg." Neboysha Brashich of Soutbeld Town's Tram- portntion Committee said he intends to discuss Iagald's proposal at the committee's next meeting. "It has merit [especially] if it reduces thc number of vehicles on the mad,' said Brashlch. "It's mipo~ant to see if we can entice the American driver to leave his vehicle behind. It's aa idea la trolley service] that has-been around for quite a winlc and something We've been wrestling with for a number of yeats." lngnld said 1~ Ires yet to speak wlth Riverhead officials because of the change in admiins~ration, but is hoping to speak with Councilman Ed Densieski about his plans. Eyentoal!y, Ingnld s~s the trolley tourism efforts of beth £orl~ without addin~ th ~C 1raffle problem; he envi- siom a South Fork branch of the aery- icc. "It ~uld get thc South Fork vlsi- tom up here, and the North Fork visi- tors down there," he said. "There's a lot of logistics to iron out with that," admired Ingnld, adding it is, however, a logical extension to what he is tsYing to accomplisk lagald is looking at trolley prices and, if ha hopes to ha in operation by the sprmg, will have to sign leases soon.
