DEER MANAGEMENT UPDATE
Melissa told LPC that Jeff Standish, managing the Deer Management Program, has requested that
clipped trails be allowed on Damianos preserved property in order to allow for hunter to get to a
mapped hunting zone.
John Sepenoski will do site inspection of Damianos hunting grounds and report back to committee as
to his recommendations for trail making. LPC may be favorable to allow some trimming to be done to
provide a trail no wider than 3’ in width for hunter’s access to zone subject to Sep’s report. Absolutely
no clearing of trees on this site.
John Sepenoski passed around sampling of Zone Map for Hogs Neck area hunting program. Finished
maps will be displayed in black & white with deer hunting guidelines.

by John Sepenoski, for LPC review. John’s memo recommended reducing mowing of area.

Area 1, as labeled in memo, one mowing annually at height not to disturb native prickly pear
o
cactus.
Area 2, since area is not used, mowing should be stopped and this area should be allowed to
o
revert to its natural state.

No LPC vote.

MILL ROAD PRESERVE and DAM POND MARITIME RESERVE
Cutting of Russian/Autumn Olive – review e-mail from Jim McMahon
Jim McMahon sent Melissa an e-mail in regard to sending his DPW crew into the Mill Preserve and
Dam Pond Reserve to cut the Russian/Autumn Olive along the trails.
The LPC discussed the fact that the best time of year for removal is in the early spring (more
specifically in March) and that the best way to remove it is to cutat the base with an application of
Roundup, or Rodeo if near wetlands or water bodies. As you know, the Town and County are co-
owners of Dam Pond, so removal at Dam Pond must be in accordance with County procedures. The
LPC is concerned about leaving the cut limbs on the site and requests that they be removed from site
and composted, or if composting is not effective in stopping the spreading of the seeds, the limbs
should chipped and buried at a landfill.
The LPC understands the immediate situation of branches obstructing the official trails and
determined to allow the following:
??
Fall cutting of branches obstructing official trails.
Branches should be cut at the base and Roundup or Rodeo should be used (subject to County
approval on Dam Pond.) Branches should be removed from the site. No other removal should
occur during the fall.
In regard to Mill Road Preserve, it was noted that there are several trails on the site and that not
all are them are recognized as official trails. Removal of Russian/Autumn Olive is approved along
the original official trails only.
??
Future plans for removal along the trail and elsewhere within the site should be developed for
review and approval by the LPC. No removal should occur until a plan is developed and
approved.
??
Laurel Lake Preserve
Emergency Access Plan from Jim McMahon
o
Aerial map showing trails, SCWA easement, and emergency access route as prepared by
Jim McMahon was distributed to LPC members. Emergency access plan route was
discussed. LPC is OK with emergency access route; however, line drawn on aerial shows
route ending at dock. Route should not be improved directly to dock and it should end at the
existing cleared area. Grade of emergency access should change at end to eliminate any
potential for run-off into lake. No impervious paving should be used for emergency access.
Vegetation should be trimmed only as necessary for emergency vehicles to pass through.
Jim McMahon’s memo to DPW Staff re: mowing trails at Laurel Lake
o
Jim’s memo and attached aerial view highlighting “no-mow” areas were reviewed. LPC
members would like to see the “no mow” area located directly behind the Pavilion. Trails
should be mowed no wider that 6’, areas around farmstand and immediate area around the
Pavilion are allowed to be mowed. Dilapidated dock and old foundation need to be removed
along with a pile of rubble near the dock. Jim McMahon, DPW, to be notified.
