A regular meeting of the Southold Town Land Preservation Committee
was held on Tuesday, November 17, 1992 at 7:30 p.m. at Southold
Town Hall.
The Minutes of the October 22, 1992 meeting stand as read. j~-J~
Since the Baxter property "Fort Corchaug" was on the agenda for
the committee to discuss, representatives from_~the Cutchogue-New
Suffolk Historical Council, the Save the _F~rt- Committee, Southold
Indian Museum, the North Fork_EnviK6r~mental Council and members of
the press and public attended the meeting.
Art introduced the committee to the audience. He also gave some
background information on the Farmland Preservation Committee and
the Open Space Committee and their merger in 1991 to become the
Land Preservation Committee.
Art reviewed the history of the fort, which was designated an
Historic Place in the National Register on January 18, 1974. The Baxter
family has cooperated fully in preserving the site during their 33 years
of ownership.
Mr. Baxter told the committee of his two plans for this property. Plan
A calls for a subdivision of 18 homesites, preserving 21.7 acres which
includes the fort site. Plan B would be a subdivision of 32 homesites,
preserving 3.2 acres of park land, which includes the fort site. Plan B
has been filed with the Town's Planning Department, but has been placed
on hold. Mr. Baxter is offering the Town 21.7 acres under Plan A for
$1,000,000, as an open space sale.
Members of the audience representing preservationist organizations
spoke in favor of the purchase by the Town. The committee invited
all present to make contact with any governmental or private source
which might provide funds for or towards the purchase of the 21.7 acres
by the Town. Art made it clear that the committee would keep the
record open to assure that all parties concerned will have an opportunity
to make submissions.
The discussion of the Baxter property took up the entire meeting, which
was adjourned at 10:15 p.m.
The next meeting of the Land Preservation Committee is scheduled for
Tuesday, December 15, 1992 at 7:30 p.m. at Southold Town Hall.
Respectfully submitted, ~
Joyce M. Wilkins, Secretary
Southold Town Land Preservation Committee
