Re: Town of Southold Youth Bureau Repdrt - 2008 Accomplishments
I am very pleased to submit the attached Town of Southold Youth Bureau Report
highlighting accomplishments for 2008.
In light of the proposed budget cuts from the state of New York, that could include
Youth Bureat~ funding, the Town of Southold has significantly benefitted from obtaining
YOUth ~tlr~au status. In 2009 we will continue to build upon our successes to improve
the lives of local youth.

TOWN OF SOUTHOLD YOUTH BUREAU REPORT 2008
January - December 2008
· School distdct superintendents (Greenport, Southold and Mattituck) appoint liaisons to Youth
Bureau Board who interview and appoint youth to the Youth Advisory Council (YAC).
· Youth Bureau Board appointed by Town Board, 20 members including 3 youth advisory council
representatives from each school distdct meet monthly. First meeting held March 31, 2008
· Youth Advisory Council formed with over 20 youth participants who meet monthly to provide
input to Youth Bureau Board, as well as avail of leadership training exercises provided by
volunteer board member.
· Creation of subcommittees on the Youth Board to fulfill its mission that include:
o Youth Outreach and Representation
o Events and Activities
o Surveys and Focus Groups
o Resource Directory
o Needs Assessment
o Strategic Plan
o Employment and Internships
o Fundraising
· Youth Advisory Council participates in Town Spring clean-up initiative at Town Beach.
· Development and dissemination of surveys to determine what youth want and what parents
perceive youth need to promote positive development, over 1400 responses received to date.
· Youth Bureau "Town Hall Meeting" hosted by Supervisor Scoff Russell to provide the
community an update of survey results and solicit feedback.
· Youth Bureau hosts ~1~ Annual Summer Jam" on July 19t~ at the Peconic Recreation Center
and Peconic School campus with live music, BBQ, recreational programs and "Youth Speak-
Out".
· Youth Bureau partnered with the Town of Southold Senior Services staff to host an
"lntergenerational Fall Barbecue" that also featured entertainment.
· Youth Bureau sponsored two parenting workshops at Town Hall featuring Comell Cooperative
Extension entitled: "Spoiled Rotten-Are You Over-indulging Your Kids" and "The Family Table
as a Tool to Strengthen Families".
· From comments made at Youth Speak Out, developed and facilitated monthly ~OPEN MIC
NIGHTS" at the Recreation Center one Saturday evening a month to be continued throughout
the year.
· With feedback from the Youth Advisory Council, created Youth Bureau website with
Information Technology director currently featured on the Town's website.
· Creation and dissemination of form to enlist responses from the community regarding
programs and services offered to foster youth development that will ultimately be included in
the Town of Southold Resource Directory to be published in the New Year.
· Youth Advisory Council holiday party recognized YAC contributions. YAC collected holiday
gifts for Community Action of Southold Town (CAST) and baked cookies and made cards for
residents of San Simeon Nursing Home.
