HomeMy WebLinkAboutBlocker, JuliusSouthold Town Board of Trustees James F. King, President 4/25/2007 Dear Mr. King, My name is Mike McNamara and since 1986 my family and I have been privileged to own a small house on Hog Neck Bay. It is, without question, my favorite place on Earth. The property is just east of Cory Creek, adjacent (on the west) to the large parcel of vacant land owned by Julius Blocker. A neighbor, Jonathan Zang recently told me that the town (or county) might be planning to purchase this land, preserving its natural beauty for generations to come. That would be wonderful news for all of us living along this pristine coastline. After this weekend's Nor'easter, I phoned the Trustees office and spoke with Elizabeth Cantrell about how to properly make repairs and improvements to the areas surrounding my bulkhead to preclude future damage. During our conversation I mentioned the extreme damage suffered by the coastline to my east (the Blocker property), and when I detailed the extent of erosion I have witnessed since 1986, she asked ifI might have pictures from that period depicting the area in question. I was able to find two photos from 1987, which place the shoreline (topsoil area) slightly behind the easterly line described by my bulkhead. Today I took some digital pictures of the same view. I would estimate the coast has eroded as much as thirty feet along portions of the area. Also, as detailed on my survey from 1982, the mean high water mark was about eight feet in front of my bulkhead. Now it is fifteen to twenty feet behind it! The beach seems to be disappearing at the rate of one foot annually, migrating west, clogging the inlet to Cory Creek. I am providing this information hoping the Trustees will take some action to preserve, if not restore this irreplaceable piece of paradise. If I can be of any assistance, please call me at 631-563-0855 (work) or 631-979-9065 (home). I would like to thank you for your efforts to preserve and protect Southold for posterity! Box 1179 Southold, NY 11971 April 5, 2007 Re: Jonathan Zang SCTM#1000-87-6-7 Dear Board Members: I'm writing on behalf of Jonathan Zang, whose property, identified on SCTM# 1000-87-6-7, faces Hog Neck Bay, a copy of the tax map noting his parcel is enclosed. There is a groin to the east of the Zang's parcel. Now that the surrounding land (45 acres shown on the tax map as lot # ! 2.1) is about to be purchased by the Town and the County, Mr. Zang ,.'s concerned that the groin will not be maintained. Without the groin much of the land to the west of the Zang parcel will erode and a fair amount of the property being purchased by the Town will be under water. Jonathan Zang wishes to maintain the groin and will do so at his own cost and expense. We would like to meet with you to discuss this matter and take whatever steps are necessary to implement such an agreement with the lawn. Vet5' truly yours. Charles R.
