Town of Southold Youth Bureau Board
Minutes of June 08, 2009
Present: Lauren Salmiery, Liza Coppola, James Gorman, Louise Hug, Tom
Rabbitt, Elaine White, Officer William Brewer, Jeffrey Standish, Bonnie Mazzaferro,
Jeanine Warns, Irene Tsontakis-Bradley, Barbara Sheryll and Phillip Beltz.
Review of May 11th Minutes: Approved.
Report of Subcommittees:
??
Youth Advisory Council (YAC)-Barbara provided preliminary findings of survey
from YAC members regarding their satisfaction with events and process. She
will provide final results at the next meeting in writing.

Events- Liza reported the GMS GOT TALENT show was a success with over
50 attendees and that it will be great to build upon for next year.

Resource Directory-Irene stated Ink Spot has the document to print (200
copies). She will send the PDF document to Phillip for inclusion on the
Town’s website. Outreach strategies are as follows: Notice in Recreation
Center bulletin (electronic and hard copy), Town Clerk’s Office poster,
possible discussion with Town Board for notice in Suffolk Times, copies to
school guidance offices and librarians (Bonnie).

Internships and Employment-Phillip reported that he has one response for
Southold government internships (for his office) and four or five for Suffolk
County employment opportunities (Dept. Public Works, Human Resource Ctr.
and Rec. Ctr.)

Fundraising: Jeff provided a list for board members to target sponsors at $25
st
(non-tax deductible) for the Mattituck Lions golf tournament July 1 at Islands
End benefitting the Youth Bureau. .
Updates:

New York State Youth Bureau Funding: No further word.

Anti-Bias Taskforce Partnership: Phillip informed the board that “Anti-Bias
Education Day” was a success with mandatory training for Town staff and an
evening public discussion. Additional public forums will be offered. Dr.
Peabody has enlisted a doctoral student to develop and administer a survey
on “bullying”.

Graffiti Removal-Officer Brewer reported that the Saturday, May 23 graffiti
removal was a success with many ROTC members and a few YAC. He
requested forwarding a thank you letter to organizer, Jon Ferris, ROTC and
Orlowski’s hardware. Phillip will prepare over the supervisor’s signature.

DARE: Phillip recognized the Police Department’s efforts in providing DARE
curriculum to local schools and the connections made with DARE graduates.
Southold Middle School Program Ideas: In absence of Jessica, Phillip distributed
proposed ideas from students and the“winning idea” of family movie night in the
park. Tentatively scheduled for August.

Suggestion: Phillip stated that a suggestion was made from the public for the Youth
Bureau to consider developing a mentoring program (e.g. minority youth in Town
government, such as the Police Dept.) Tabled, will see how summer employment
and internship programs succeed.
Parenting Workshops: Suffolk County detective Rory Forrestal confirmed that he
will offer a workshop regarding “promoting safety of social networking sites”. This will

be held on Wednesday, July 15 at 6 p.m. at the Town Hall meeting room.
Future Presentations: The North Fork Alliance will present their substance abuse
prevention program at July’s meeting.
Other: Lauren reported that several Southold high school students attended the
Suffolk County Youth Bureau’s “Youth Congress” in Hauppauge.
Presentation: East End Student Film Project 2009 presented their summer
program.
Next Meeting Date: Monday, July 13th at 5:30 p.m.
