We are pleased that you are interested in learning about our Town's program for preserving these landmarks. The mission of the Landmark Preservation Commission, as outlined in our local preservation law, is to identify and protect landmarks like yours from incompatible alterations or demolition. The landmarks law insures that alterations to the building's exterior retain its architectural integrity as well as maintaining the ambiance of the general neighborhood. Changes to the interior are not subject to the Commission's jurisdiction. The local law also covers the demolition or moving of a registered landmark. Once approved, the landmark designation remains with the property in perpetuity. The enclosed brochure explains the benefits of placing a landmark on the Town's landmarks register and the process for applying for a Certificate of Appropriateness (C of A) when you want to add on to or make alterations to the exterior of your registered landmark. An added incentive, recently passed by the Town Board, provides for a partial exemption from real property taxes caused by assessment increases for the restoration, alteration or rehabilitation of approved Town landmarks. Suffolk County already has enacted legislation which allows for similar exemptions. To apply for Southold Town landmark status, simply complete the enclosed application and send it to the Landmarks Preservation Commission at the address above. We will schedule a visit to your landmark; recommend that the Town Board approve it; and then invite you to a Town Board meeting to receive your official document (suitable for framing) and a plaque to place on your landmark. If you have any questions about the application process and the responsibilities of landmark owners, please contact Damon Rallis, Landmarks Administrator in the Town's Building Department, either by letter to the address above, by phone at 631-765~1802 or by e-mail to Damon. Rallis('~,town.southotd. ny.us. We appreciate your interest in helping preserve the historic homes and buildings in Southold Town. Thanks for being a partner-in-preservation.
