Make sure that the sparks and embers do not get out of the stove when the door is open. The spark screen must always be used when the stove is operated as an open fireplace. 2.6. Disposal of Ashes Ashes should be placed in a metal container with a tight fitting lid. The closed container of ashes should be placed on a noncombustible floor or on the ground, well away from all combustible materials, pending fi- nal disposal If the ashes are disposed of by burial in the soil or otherwise locally dispersed, they should be retained in the closed container until all cinders have thoroughly cooled. 2.7. Creosote-Formation and the Need for Removal When wood is burned slowly, it produces tar and other organic vapors, which combine with expelled moisture to form creosote. The creosote vapors condense in the relatively cool chimney flue of a slow burning fire. As a result, creosote residue accumulates on the flue lining. When ignited this creosote makes an extremely hot fire. If the creosote has accumulated it should be removed 2.8. Use solid wood or coal as fuel never use liquid fuels. Liquid fuels utilized in a stove can result in an explo- sion and fire. Never use gasoline, gasoline-type lantern fuel, kerose- ne, charcoal lighter fluid, or similar liqdds to start or .freshen up. a fire in this fireplace stove, ~';eep all such liquids well away from the fireplace stove while it is in use. Please see the section in these instruc- tions marked ,Operation-Coal Burning~,. 4.2. Operating-Wood Burning The wood fuel should be air dried for at least 4 to 6 months and covered in such a way as to be kept dry while allowing a free circulation of air through the wood. 4.3. Firing with Closed Door Open fully the draft regulator located on lower front of the door. Crumple a quantity of paper and place a qu- antity of dry kindling randomly on top of the paper mid light. Once this kindling has caught, add more kindling and close the door leaving the draft regulator fully open. After a short interval begin adding normal size pieces. Allow these pieces to -catch,, and burn strong- ly for a short interval. The fully open draft regulator should now be adjusted to regulate the heat output of the stove to the desired In place of constant rekindling, the stove may be :.'apt burning continuously day and night. When the wood has burned almost completely and only embers re- main, new fuel should be added and the draft regulator opened fully. The new Icad of fuel should be allowed to ignite and burn well for a short period of time before adjusting the draft regulator to desired level of heat output. 4.4. Firing with Open Door When firin{3 the stove as an open fireplace follow the same procedures as above in regards to lighting the fire. At the beginning of a fire, the draft in the chimney may be poor. To prevent smoke being released into the room, close the stove door and fully open the draft regulator. After the chimney has become warm and the draft has improved, the door may be opened and the spark screen put in place. Always use the SPARK SCREEN when operating the stove as an open fire- place. WARNING-FIREPLACE STOVES EQUIPPED WITH DOOR(S) SHOULD BE OPERATED ONLY WITH DOOR(S) FULLY OPEN OR DOOR(S) FULLY CLOSED. iF DOOR(S) ARE LEFT PARTLY OPEN GAS AND FLAME MAY BE DRAWN OUT OF THE FIREPLACE STOVE OPENING, CREATING RISKS FROM BOTH FIRE AND SMOKE. For your safety, follow these installation instructions. If this stove is not properly installed, a house fire may result. 4.5. Operation-Coal Burning DO NOT BURN COAL WITHOUT GRATE. Install the ash pan beneath the coal grate. A tool is provided to shake the grate and for removal of the ash pan. 6. Replace the baffle plate. 7. Replace top plate. Lighting a coal fire: Establish a hot wood fire and allow it to burn until it becomes reduced to a large glowing bed of embers. Add a layer of coal about 2 inches deep. Close door and fully open draft regulator. Allow coal to ~catch, and burn until glowing. Add more coal. Adjust draft re- gulator once fire is established, to desired heat output. THIS STOVE IS INTENDED TO BURN NUT SIZE AN* TRACITE AND BITUMIOUS COAL. 4.6. Fireplace Stoves must not be fired to extent that they assume a red glow. If they are atlowed to do so the castings and enamel finish may then be damaged. DO NOT OVERFIRE. iF FIREPLACE STOVE OR CHIMNEY CONNECTOR GLOWS, YOU ARE OVERFIRING. For your safety, follow these installation instructions. If this stove is not properly installed, a house fire may 4.7. During the first few times you use the new stove, the stove may become somewhat damp. In order to prevent this condensate from running down the sides of the stove, open the door slight{y during the first firing. As soon as the stove is warm, the condensate will ecapo- rate and the door may be closed. A bottle of black Se- notherm is enclosed for unenamelled room heater. It may be used for touching up possible scratches in the finish. Color touch-up paintfor enamelled stoves is available through your Jetui dealer. On enammelled fireplace stoves, this condensate sho- uld be wiped off immediately, as it will permanently stein or pit the surface. 5. SWEEPING AND MAINTENANCE 5.1. When wood and coal burns, soot and creosote may develop and could together with other uncombustible particles settle in the chimney and the chimney con- nector. If these deposits increase, it may be necessary to have them removed, this must be done by sweeping the chimney and chimney connector regularly. How often depends on the use of the stove. As a rule, the chimney connector and chimney should be inspected at least twice monthly during the heating season to de- termine if a creosote build up has occured. If the chimney and chimney connectqr is not swept regularly, e chimney fire may develop. If a fire should erupt, the chimney should be inspected by a professio- nal before using again. For your safety, follow these in- stallation instructions. If this stove is not properly in- stalled, a house fire may result. 5.2. The Jetul Fireplace Stove 8 may burn .continuoosly. (day and night) even on small Ioeds. Should pitch develop, during such continuous burning conditions the fire+place stove should be fired intensely at the beginning ~ eac~h I~oading, on regular basis. This method of operating the st~ee w~!l[ help to reduce the buildup of creosote. When sweeping the chimney connector it may be con- venient to disconnect the stove. The chimney con- nector must be cleaned in its fullest length to assure safe removal of all creosote which has condensed on the inner surface. Be sure to install the chimney connector properly after sweeping and secure it with the screws used at the joints. Disposal of Ashes (See 2.6.) Maintenance We recommend that you inspect your stove whenever sweeping is performed. Check all visible surfaces for cracks. Inspect the joints for visible leaks and check the gasket in the door and on the top lid. Loose gas- kets may be repaired by applying some water glass (sodium silicate) to the gasket groove and pressing the gasket back into the groove. Allow to dry before using again. 6.
