Many an elderly person now living in or remembering Southold recalls the ioy of watching Aunt Itrushy weave rag carpets in Ihe basemem house on Bowery Lane. Aunt lerushy became quite a "character" in her [ate years, a humorous and witty old lady. The lasl time she sal in the loom was in the summer of 1940 al ti~e Tercentenary Celebr=- tion of the Founding o1' Southold when many fine exhibils were shown in the Mattituck High School Building. Of course, people marvelled at her age, healH~ and v,i[. ,~n,I I was amused to hA~'e her tell me, "You Lno~, Ruse. and Gertrude (her grandaughters) come tu see me and bring their friends and they say 'This is my gr,~ndmolher and They want me IO live to be a hundred, and THEN what will sly smile and would ask, "Looking for a job, Sid? You'll bare lo v, aita while yet." R,C. tlewe11. Rose Remembers, 19~6 t~ - 83- r~ The most vivid recollection of Aunt lerushy's long life was her earliest. She was a very little girl when rhe Long Island Rail- road was completed from New York ~o Greenport in 1844. No leJegraph line connected Ihe stations as yel, but the engineers and station agents figured on a fairly accurate schedule. On Ihe day 1hat Aunt Jerushy remembers, the engineer of Ihe west- bound train stopping at Soulhold was told that the eastbound would be coming along pretty soon and he'd better lay off on the sidetrack until it came through. "Oh, she's always late," he said. "1 got plenty of time." and Toot! Toot! he took off for Peconlc to switch off and wait there. Little Jerushy and her brother Billy were playing with neigltborhood children in field below the railroad embankment at the Bowery bridge when Billy hollered, "Look! Two trains!" The eastbound was NOT late and met the westbound, head on, full speed, iust east of the bridge· The engines locked toge- ther and reared up in the air. Some of the wooden cars were shattered, spewing window glass, sl~utters, people and their he- longings. One engineer and several passengers were killed. The window dlutters were a feature of those early Iralns. and AUllt lerushy said that for years afterward Iheir slals were used as rulers in school The baggage car stayed on the tracks, and what made the greatest impression on the little girl was a woman confined by chains to its barred window. She wore a bright blue dress and was trying to shake the bars and screaming. She wzs a mental patient being taken to the State Asylum· R.C. Newell. Rose Remembers. 1976 - 84 - Aunt Jerushy's grandson, William Carpenter, now owns_ the basement house and occupies"it in summer~To my deligbt "sh~ ~ve me the loom and its appurtenances, with detailed in. structions in the I.ask of drawing in the warp. She said she gave it to me because my husband, being in the woolen business was interested and knew about weaving, and she was afraid her grandchddren would chop it up for kindling wood. I'm sure they wouldn't have and actually they COULDN'T have be- cause, when we moved it~ we found the oak was hard as ton. Forlunatdy it was put together with wooden pegs, as no nail could have penetrated it. I used to say Ihat when I became an old lady, ['d weave r~g rugs like Aunt ~erushy, but now I AM an old lady and I'm so busy I haven't had time yet! Now, in 1975, I have passed it on to the SOUTHOLO HIS- TORICAL SOCIETY, where it can be seen in the Moore House. I don't know how many generations back it started, nor with wha{ individual, but there is a Iraditiun cherished and handed down in all our family branches about "Gianl He was a man strong of muscle and strong of characler, and whenever anyone in succeeding generations comes bravely through an ordeal of illness or trouble we say that they must have some Giant Over[on in their veins. It's something to live up How fortunale I was Io be able to say "Gramma Case", "Grandma Williams" and "Great-Grandmother Overton"! Three grandmothers! I feel sorry for tho~e who leu me they never knew a grandmother,-no one to play games with you~ to make you delicious cookies, to tell you stories of long ago. I was quile touched recently by what a young woman said Io me at 1he Historical Museum. I was Silting at my great-grand- mother's spinning wheel, sho~ying how to make linen thread. At m~, side was a hooded cradle with a doll in it, and I ex- plained thai the mother could keep the baby happy as she spun by giving the cradle a push to set it rocking now and then. I told about other things in the room, alt 1rom our local families. "Oh," said the girl, "How wonderful! I wish I had something from my family's past; but we moved so many times while I was growing up that all [ have is a beaten-up old doll my mother managed to save." -- 85 - Use Only Coastal Erosion Permit Application ~_~_Wethmd Permit Appli~tion AdminisWative Permit Amendment/Transfer/Exte~asion ~.Re~e~ved Applie. ation:~ ~ived ~plcted Applidilion / / lncompl~e __SEQRA Classifiealion: TyI~ I TyI~ I1 Unlisted __Coordination:(date s%t)~ __t~AC R~m'ral S~nt: ....-Oat¢ of lnspe~ion: _~_~Receipt ofCAC Repod:" ~t,ead ^genq~ Determination: Technical Review: Resolution: -- z~o~ ~/0/o ~ Name of^pplicant ~d~..~ r of Trustees Application Land Ama (in square feet): Ama Zoning:.
