The approved Building Permit drawings indicate 2x10 and 2x8 rafters for various locations. To avoid mixing rafter sizes we reviewed our design in consideration of the revised snow loading of the 2007 Residential Code of New York, all the rafters were re-calculated resulting in a conclusion that 2x8's at 16" on center meet the design load requirements The buildings maximum rafter span is 14 feet; from table R802.5.1 (1), #2 Douglas-fir rafters at 16" on center can span 18'-2" (copy attached). At the Master Bedroom, pa~t of the ceiling is sloped but there is an opposing brace diminishing the rafter span to approximately 9 feet. We therefore recommend approval of this substitution which to my knowledge and belief conforms to the loading/span requirements of the New York State Code.
