January 13, 2000 Benny Orlowski Chairman, Southold Town Planning Board Southold N.Y. 11971 Dear Benny, I am sure by now you are aware of the problems and controversy surrounding Gabfielsens purchase of my father's Sound Ave. property. So if I may I would like to add my two cents in. I grew up on Aldrich Lane from 1960 to 1976 than moved to the house in question after a painstaking renovation which is where I learned my love for construction which 1 still do today. I used to get offthe school bus on Sound Ave. and help the carpenters which the demolition and thought it was great compared to farming. After 1982 I knew it was time to leave the family business what with potatoes being 2.005 per hundred and construction taking off. So you can see I am very attached to the house and stLrrounding property and don't like drastic change which I must admit, 1 am part off, But out of necessity to feed my family. There where three houses on Aldrich Lane back than, Now there are 100 in the same acreage. And no farm stands. So take in account those 100 houses with the normal growth over the last 20 yrs., Add in the farm stands and wineries and what you have is gfidlock! Three or four yrs. ago my mother was attempting to make a left into her driveway and there was a line of cars as long as the eye could see heading west and my 3 yr. old son was in the backseat of her car and she hears a crash. The car stopped behind her was slammed into by another and ended up inches from my moms car. That could have been little Johns life! We have to take back our town. These people may call themselves lifelong farmers and eastenders, But don't be fooled. They have never paid taxes in out town, They aren't farmers as we now what a farmer is and that isn't putting flowers in a plastic pail and selling them for 4 for 10 on the side off a road with obnoxious signs crossed out from 3 for 10 from 2 for 10 in a steel shed fenced in, aka Helens Country Farm Stand. Than if you really want to get a laugh go up to Centereach and get a look at there other place. I realize this may sound like sour grapes and I am a Kujawski and yes have to lose by this with reduced property values being 1/3 owner of my mom's house. But I am truly writing this as a lifelong member of Southold Town. I have owned my own house here since 1989, All my men that work for me live In Southold and most of my work is in Southold. 1 love this place and have 2 children which go to SoutholdSchool. We can't be swayed by these west end people with there money and smiling faces. I in-fact went to my father and Uncle and with my sister and mother put in a bid to purchase the property but was outbid by Mr. Gabfielsen, Than told it was a done deal and that they where going to get there permits" No matter what" I have the right! Whats rights do we have? All I'm asking for is a fair shake and to do the right thing. No more farmstands. Plus the Harbes are good, Hardworking people and don't need the competion. They have 8 children to feed and going off to college and nm a class operation. No tin or chinsy signs on there land. Tell Mr. Gabrielsen to try somewhere else or buy another parcel. I have even worked as a sub-contractor for them and feel so strongly about this am willing to give it up to save these 2 acres. Sincerely, John P. Kujawski 111 BENNETT ORLOWSKI, JR.
