Comments
The Long Creek portion of Hashamomuck Pond is seriously
contaminated with coliform bacteria. Under certain climatic
and hydrograpi~ic conditions, water from the creek may
contaminate the entire pond. The water from the creek seems
to more seriously contaminate the easterly shoreline of the
pond. This situation prevents the accurate drawing of closure
lines to insure that shellfish will be harvested from portions
of the pond with acceptable water quality.
.The culvert (Station C) seems to be an almost constant source
of coliform bacteria for Long Creek.
It is recommended that all of Long Creek, Hashamomuck Pond,
Mill Creek and tributaries be designated as an uncertified
shellfish land.
Also worrisome is the heavy commercial development of the
shoreline of Shelter Island Sound near the entrance to Mill Creek.
However, data which might suggest a need for a change in
designation are not available at this time.
