Railroad Stations: Valerie and Neb met with to town architects and LIRR people and made some
compromises in [he design. They will work with us in developing a plaza if ridership increases.
(STEA money could be used for later improvements. Barbara suggested asking Cornell Cooperative
Extension if anyone from their volunteer board would be interested in working on railroad station
landscaping maintenance. She will let Neb know the results of her inquiry. It will be necessary to
provide a source of water at each station if the plantings are to survive. In Mattituck, the design
problems are complicated by the fact [hat a Large parcel next to the station is owned by the bank.
Glynnis wtll be in Charge of coming up with ideas for ISTEA improvements at the RR stations.
She needs to know what we envision in terms of enhancement. The committee sees manv uses of hub
centers: meeting trave(y'2•s' needs ! restrooms, phones, maps, information, package collection and
shipping services. a volunteer conciergel. an attractive magnet for visitors and residents, possible
cultural uses (aR exhibits, concerts). Fach hub should have a unique twist to make it interesting.
Perhaps [he Chambers of Commerce could give support to this. Maybe the trolleys used by Tamer
could be used for tours of the wineries. with stops at each hub. Further discussion ensued and a plan
will evolve.
Park Service: Dwayne and Neb met with the National Park Service two weeks aso. They want our
continued assistance. They will come back October I to meet with us and begin planning for Moore's
Woods.
Fundinv: The total DOT grant for our Seaview Trails project now stands at 510.000. Approximately
580,000 for the kayak launch and trails development segment and 525.000 for the computer assisted
accommodations segment were eliminated. In order to take control of the grant money, two
resolutions must be passed by the Town Board:
1. One to create a capital development project for the Town in the amount of 5~3~,000.
_'. One to suarantee that non-(STEA funding is in place for DOT j$77,000 cash and $10,000
in in-kind services).
Neb will also ask the Town to budget 52.000 for such things as a computerized information service,
bathrooms, and bicycle rentals.
Other Business: Neb and Joel Lauber talked about the possibility oY having bicycle trails going
through [he edges of six vineyards. Joel was optimistic about this prospect and will speak to the Wine
Council.
Neb received a memo from Supervisor Cochran regarding the Truck Route on Aldrich Lane in
Laurel. She has received complaints from homeowners about trucks using this route. A short
discussion resulted in no definitive answer. Margaret mentioned that if one of the coals of the
'transportation Committee and the Town is to have Route 48 be a "through route" spanning the Town.
Aldrich Lane is a natural artery for truck traffic to use. It is well-established and has been in use for
manv years.
Valerie wants to nominate our Seaview Trails plan for an award by the National Planners.
However. the deadline for submission is September t 1. 1996, and we would need to assemble a 1-page
summary of the project, two paves of backoraund, and two sets of slides. We viii try to do this next
near.
The next meeting will be September 2-1. 1996 at -lP`vl. Southold ']'own Hall.
Respectfully su'omiaed. Nlar~aret H. Brown
