Present: Neb Brashich, Margaret Brown, Frank Field, Bemie Jacobson, Ruth Oliva, Michelle Zaloom, Valerie
Scopaz, Pete Hams -Supt. of Highways, Jamie Richter -Hwy. Dept . Lt. Marty Flatlet' -Southold PD
Oaklawn Av n ~ hold: Neb received a letter from Lee Whitehurst and a letter to Valerie from Angela
Norton regarding an accident and potential accidents at Oaklawn Ave and Main Road in Southold. The NYSDOT
is not willing to make changes at this intersection because of lack of accidents. A response will be sent to these
two people with this information. The Commission and the Police Department will ask the Town Board to ask
the DOT to lower the speed limit to 45 mph beginning at the intersection of Rte. 25 and Laurel Ave in Southold
to Silvennere Road in Greenport.
Gateway Bridge tze~~~a*nlction Prooosai; We received the minutes of our last meeting wiUt the DOT (May 13,
2002). The design team will come back to us with an update in the fall regarding plans for the bridge. Jamie met
with Ron Kudla after our meeting. The general consensus is that it would be easrer for traffic and more
economical to build a new bridge alongsrde the old bridge with a slightly new alignment. The new bridge would
not be directly is the wetlands. This placement would also be beneficial to Penny Lumber and Corrazini Asphalt
because they would receive somewhat more access space from the roadway. Neb looked at the new Sag Harbor
bridge and said the lights used on that bridge would be appropriate for the new Gateway Bridge. The
Commission will invite the Trustees, Highway Department, Police Department and Town Board to our meeting
with the DOT in September.
LIRR: We received a reply to Neb's letter to Brian P. Dolan, Vice President, Market Development & Public
Affairs of the LIRR. He gave us many reasons why our request for a higher speed by the trains would be difficult
if not impossible, and very expensive ($53 million). Michelle wondered how significant this figure really is in
light of their overall operating budget. Frank will help Neb draft a reply.
mincer Horton's Park: Supervisor Horton has drafted a letter to the DOT asking that the Drainage PondslDocks
intended for this park (in Greenport) be delinked from the overall Resurfacing of Rte. 25 project in order that the
park be completed sooner.
Laurel Links: Frontage of the new Laurel Links golf course and subdivision in Laurel has run into trouble with
the DOT. Among other things, the DOT is requinng that a 5' wide sidewalk be installed from the entrance to the
subdivision along Rte. 25 to the property line to the east. It is felt by the owner and by this Commission that the
sidewalk is pointless, leading to nowhere, and will cause destruction of the natural environment in order to be
built. Therefore, this Commission will make a recommendation to the DOT that this requirement be waived.
SF~: There will be a special stakeholders meeting Thursday June 20 at 7PM at the Flanders Recreation
Center. The presenters will model different scenarios to study their pros and cons. The goal is to get mote
infonnation on the table when the negotiations get serious. Stakeholders will be asked to give their input.
Seaview Trails: Michelle Zaloom showed a protoType design for the new bicycle trail maps that will be given out
to the public. It is a clever design suggested by Steve Grzesik at the Inkspot in Southold. She will investigate
printing costs.
Other. Renoanon of the rnilroad bridge on Bridge Lane in Cutchogue is on bold because of a change in funding.
F arking on 5 Street in New Suffolk at Legends Restaurant is under review. A large section is town road and
could be used for parking but is currently being used to park boats.
fhe next meeting will be Monday, July 22, 2002 at 10:00 AM, Southold Town Hall
Respectfully submitted, Margaret H. Brown
