Southold Town Hall
November 25, 2002
Present: Neb Brashich, Margaret Brown, Frank Field, Pete Hams, Ruth Oliva, Jamie Richter, Jim
Bunchuck, member of the press
Landfill Access and Egress: Jim Bunchuck came to the meeting to explain the new entrance and exit
plans for the Landfill. The goal of the Transportation Commission is to have the entrance only on Rte.
48 and all exits from Cox Lane. (It is possible that west-bound exits would still be allowed on R[e. 48.)
There will be a traffic light at Cox Lane. It will be installed when the new exit has been completed. Mr.
Bunchuck expects the new exit route through the dump to be ready this winter or early spring.
Betty Neville has received another complaint about parking on the west side of Cox Lane north
of Rte. 48. The "No Parking" signs on the east side are not helping because no one parks there anyway.
Traffic Ljght on Peconic Lane: A traffic light has been suggested for the intersection of Peconic Lane
and Rte. 48. It is thought by the Highway Department that the light a[ Cox Lane may help relieve the
traffic flow at Peconic Lane. We will until the Cox light has been in place for a few weeks before
deciding about Peconic Lane.
Peconic Landing: The bike lane in Greenport neaz Peconic Landing has now been increased to 5 feet
again. Jamie will send Neb a copy of the DOT letter saying this was done.
Crosswalks: Neb went to the Town Board 8 weeks ago and was asked to look at crosswalks in the
Town. Lt. Marty Flatley sent Neb a list of all the crosswalks and Neb forwarded it with a letter
November 25, 2002 to Frank Pearson, Acting Regional Traffic Engineer for NYSDOT, asking for a
meeting to review the issue of pedestrian safety. In the meantime, commission members are asked to
identify any particular danger spots and discuss them at the meeting.
SEEDS Ups: The Town has voted to continue with the SEIDS Program. A Stakeholders meeting will beheld
Thursday, December 12, 7-9PM at the Shelter Island Town Hall.
Seaview Trails: Neb will meet with Michelle to finalize the Bicycle Trails pamphlet and trailhead signs,
and the costing thereof. Pete Harris thinks all the bicycle signs have now been replaced. The Highway
Department will help set up the trailhead signs.
MTA/LIRR: Frank has asked the LIRR to fix the railroad from Ronkonkoma to Riverhead. If we ask
for a speed limit of 60 mph instead of 65 mph, it is easier for the railroad to accommodate. The
commission received a letter from Joan Berton, dated 10/11/02 asking for help in getting better rail
service to the North Fork. Neb will include a copy of her letter when he writes to Brian Dolan, Vice
President of the LIRR.
Peconic Bad DrainagrLProiects: The Greenport ponds (Skipper Horton Pazk) have been added
to this State project. The project will construct improvements to existing drainage systems at the
following 141ocations: James Creek, Matt., Richmond Creek, Pec. Jockey Creek, Town Creek, Budds
Pond, Mill Creek all in Southdd, Eugene's Road, Cut, East Marion Sea Wall, Skipper Horton Park, Gpt.
and Sawmill Creek and three other locations in Riverhead.
Tree Committee: Margaret will call Mike Domino of the Tree Committee and also Mr. (lass of the State
DOT with information about the tree in front of Michael Herbert's property in Mattituck.
New Business: Commission Reappointments: Bernie Jacobson has resigned. Captain Thomas F. Fox
has submitted his name for appointment.
The next meeting will be Monday, December 16, 2002, at 10 AM, Southold Town Hall.
Respectfully submitted, Margaret H. Brown
