HomeMy WebLinkAbout03/21/2005 Southold Transportation Commission Southold Town Hall March 21, 2005 Present: Neb Brnshich, Margaret Brown, Frank Field, Ruth Oliva, Jamie Richter, Michelle Zaloom, SEEDS Coordinator Pam Thiele SEEDS Update: Pam Thiele will go before the Town Board on April 12 to discuss the progress of SEEDS. There will be a Town Meeting regarding SEEDS on May 3. Pam has met with the Southampton Town Board and they believe it will provide regional solutions. Southampton wanted to be reassured that a Cross Sound Ferry decision would not come out of SEEDS. Scenic BywllYs IOrient Causeway Proiect: There has been no further progress at this point. The Town Attorney sent a letter on March 8, 2005 to Mark Woods in the Landscape Architecture Bureau of the NYSDOT with the Agreement between Southold Town and NYSDOT regarding the Causeway Project entitled "The North Fork, Scenic Byway: Resource Protection Project Causeway Between East Marion and Orient." He asked for a fully executed Agreement as soon as it is available. A sign identifying Rte. 25 as a Scenic Byway is being designed. Michelle is working on it. It was suggested that a lighthouse be incorporated in the design since we have so many lighthouses in the town. Variable Mes~e Si~s: A request has been made to the County DOT by the Mattituck Uons Oub for Variable Message Signs for the Strawberry Festival. A letter in response, dated March 11, 2005, from Shaik A. Saad, P.E. of the Traffic Engineering and Safety Department, stated that the matter was under consideration and a decision will be sent in writing. In that regard, Neb suggested that we ask for a sign for the SEEDS meetings in the five towns. He suggested to Pam Thiele that it be discussed at the EEfC meeting and be organized at that level for all five towns. Five Towns Rural Transit Committee: Margaret reported on activities and goals of the Committee. In the discussion of improved rail service, Frank Field raised several questions about scheduling, eqnipment, rail usage, union involvement, grade crossings, legal ramifications, shared jurisdictions and the use of GPS in monitoring the location of trains. His experience with the L1RR could be a valuable resource to the Committee and he will be invited to a future meeting. Old Business: There will be a meeting on April 6, 2005 with the County DPW to discuss what work is going to be done on Rte. 48 and also to follow up on a possible traffic circle at the intersection of Main Street (Rte. 25) and Rte. 48 in Greenport. Jamie will find out what is happening about the Bridge Lane railroad bridge. New Business: Jamie has written a letter (February 28, 2(05) to William Hillman, PE Chief Engineer of Suffolk County DPW regarding accidents and near accidents at the intersection of Rte. 48 and Cox Lane. The new traffic light is creating some confusion and needs to be adjusted. Supervisor Horton received a letter from Robert A. Rocchetta of North Bayview Road in Southold expressing his concern about the intersection of North Bayview Road and the entrance to Harbor Ughts. This item was tabled with the intention of discussing it at the next meeting when Capt. Marty Flatley will be present. The next meeting will be Monday, April 25, 2005 at 10 AM, Southold Town Hall.
