and second by Marty Ratley.
Greenpgrt Village STC Commission Participation: Neb sent Mayor Nyce a set of Transportation Commission
Minutes and our mandate. A Greenport Village representative has not yet been selected for the Commission.
SEEDS Update: Neb reported that he and Tom Wickham met with the East End Transportation Council last
Wednesday. This was the first time they worked on the special sub-committee on transportation and land use.
Neb would like help with the land use portion and suggested that one of the Town planners might participate.
Tom expects there to be a major traffic problem in Cutchogue with the new "Heritage" development.
The committee usually meets on the 2'd Wednesday each month at 10:30 AM at Riverhead Town Hall.
Orient Causeway Proiect Status Re.vort: The DOT engineers are not ready to say if they can allocate the
remaining funds. Plans are still preliminary.
Town OrientationJInte'l'retive Signage Proiect Update: Public notice for the project came out Thursday.
~y Road 48 Roundabout: Neb talked to County Engineer Hillman and also wrote a letter to County
Supervisor Steve Levy (June 18,2(07) asking for help to redress the fact that the Town of Southold received no
funding for capital improvements, either for roundabouts or the Sound View Motel project. Hillman reported that
they have now found money for a feasibility study for roundabouts. Also, he and his chief traffic engineer will
meet with the owners of Sound View Motel to discuss setting up interim measures for traffic safety - ie two cross
walks with waming signs. The Commission will get a report from Hillman after that meeting. Supervisor Russell
will be advised of developments. We are still hoping for $1 million for this year and $lmillion for next year.
Five T w raJ T it ate: Margaret emphasized the importance of Southold Town's active participation
in the .. 'ty study for the East End Shuttle, even though Southampton is the lead agency.
<ii/;\, ~l!'IlQp in Mattituck: Amy sent the Commission a letter and site plan for the proposed changes at thetas
station known as the Warex Project. It was suggested that they make the site more scenic by using a gabled roof.
She reported that DOT needs to approve the plantings on Rte. 25. They will use the existing building which will
include a proposed car wash and convenience store. The exit on Factory will be moved further north and the
western-most access on Rte. 25 will be closed. There are still concerns about the length of the curb cuts, turning
radius in the car wash, traffic patterns within the complex and control of entrances and exits on both sides, but on
the whole, the new proposal is an improvement over the original plan.
Heritage at Cutchogue: Amy sent the Commission a letter describing the proposed Adult Community iQlpwn as
Heritage at Cutchogue. This would consist of 139 detached and attached dwellings, a swimming pool, tell!l' .
courts, clubhouse, parking for 322, and man made ponds to serve as drainage basins. Concerns include ad' " al
traffic in and out of the complex through existing residential areas. The proposal was apparently based part! ,.' 'n
the assumption that there would be a traffic light at the intersection of Depot Lane and Rte. 25. This was ,. r
requested by the Town and the Transportation Commission is hereby on record that we were neve~~;r of a
traffic light at Depot Lane and Rte. 25. Further discussion of the project was tabled until the nw . but an
interim letter will be sent explaining our position. Meanwhile, Commission members are reqllCl!llie4w,ltO'llJld
look at the area in question.
Other Business: Bruno read a note from Mr. Herbert complaining about the use of the old restaurant building on
Rte 25 near Wickham Ave. Mr William Goggins intends to renovate the building and make it into offices. Mr.
Herbert is concerned about increased traffic congestion and safety.
The bridge over the railroad tracks on Bridge Lane has been damage by a large truck that was over the weight
limit for the bridge. Bridge Lane is closed to all but local traffic while the bridge is closed for repairs.
Old Business: The DOT has begun surveying for the new "Gateway" bridge in Greenport and they will send
Jamie a construction schedule.
The next meeting will be Monday July 23, 2007 at 10 AM, Southold Town Hall.
Respectfully submitted, Margaret H. Brown
