HomeMy WebLinkAbout02/12/2007 RECEIV;:O II Ai '( 2007 Southold Transportation Commission Southold Town Hall February 12, 2007 Soull,,,ld TLvrn C!erk Present: Neb Brashich, Margaret Brown, Frank Field, Tom Fox, Ruth Oliva, Tom Wickham Stan Mickus, Richard MacMurray of Cross Sound Ferry, Bill Schlumpf of Island Structures Engineering, PC Orient CausewllY Proiect Status R<:part: Bill Schlumpf of Island Structures Engineering presented the Draft Report of the Orient Causeway Project to "underground" the utility lines on the causeway. These lines include Key Span gas lines, LIP A transmission and distribution lines, Verizon and Cablevision lines. Separation requirements of the gas and electrical lines of a minimum of 15feet would mandate that both sides of the road be used and therefore double the costs. It would also be very costly to meet DEC and DOT requirements. The total price estimate of $25 - $30 million, with very little possibility of outside funding support, makes this project appe;u to be an unrealistic undertaking for Southold Town. Therefore, the Transportation Commission voted (on a motion by Tom Fox, seconded by Margaret Brown) to recommend not to move forward with Phase II of the proposed undergrounding. SEEOS Update: The next meeting is Wednesday, February 14. Neb will go. A new document regarding language requested by Tom Wickham and the Easthampton Town Board ensuring more input from local town boards ha~ been prepared. This needs to be approved by the Town Board. This will be brought to the Town Board on March 13. Town Orientation/lnteQ)retive Sil1nal1e Proiect Update: Steve Riddle offered to provide Neb with a draft RFP. Artistic aspects, structural approach and placement all must be considered together. Neb also met with Supervisor Scott Russell to assure funding. He hopes to have a draft RFP in the next 3 to 4 weeks. County Road 48 Roundabout: Neb was informed by DPW Chief Engineer Bill Hillman that money was not voted on by the County Legislature for roundabouts. But he wants to work out a way to find funding from other approved projects for 2007. Tom Wickham suggested that this should be mentioned to the Town Board at the March 13 meeting. Bus Shelters: The bids may have been let for three shelters. The Shelters will be installed sometime this year. NYSOOYT Bridie Proiect ll.pdate: Letting for the project is set for March 22. They will try to start in early summer. The first step will be to pile tons of dirt on the site for three months to compact the soil. Visible work on the bridge should begin at the end of 2007, with completion expected by late summer 2008. Five Town Rural Transit Update: Margaret had nothing new to report. Old Business: Stan Mickus and Richard MacMurray of Cross Sound Ferry asked if the latest Traffic Study was finished. Neb reported that the draft and final report will be presented to the Town Board at 12:30 tomorrow. New Business: Mr. Mickus and Mr. MacMurray also reported that in the lawsuit against Easthampton regarding establishing ferry service there, the Appeals Court has given the case back to the District Court seeking more "evidence and discovery". This is a victory for Cross Sound Ferry. The next meeting will be Monday March 26, 2007 at 10 AM, Southold Town Hall. Respectfully submitted, Margaret H. Brown
