Southold Transportation Commission Southold Town Hall April 22, 2003 Present: Neb Brashich, Margaret Brown, Tom Fox, Ruth Oliva, Michelle Zaloom,Victor L'eplattenier, Jamie Richter SRFDS: Neb reported that two meetings are coming up. The first, on April 23, will feature two town supervisors, Linda Cooper, Yorktown and Thom Kleiner, Orangetown, where Sustainable Development studies have been running. These studies are sponsored by NYMTC and are similar in set up to SEEDS. The meeting will be at North Haven Village Hall on Ferry Road, 1O-11AM. The second meeting will be a community Stakeholders meeting April 30, 7-9PM at Southampton Town Hall. This meeting will continue the study process and decide which scenarios should move forward. Two subcommittees, land use and transportation, will have specific maps with proposed scenarios. Neb urged attendance at both meetings. All decisions will occur after the next elections so that they do not become politicized. The general public needs to be involved. Neb will provide a summary report of the Southampton traffic study with 127 recommendations. Wine Country: The Wine Council, via the Promotion Council, is considering an information center at Exit 70 of the LIE which would tell about Wine Country and also (maybe) provide small shuttle busses to take people out to the wineries. They will apply for federal funding. Seaview Trails: The bicycle maps are due out May 2. They will be placed at the information booths and where beach permits are available. The Promotion Council will pick up the funding for future printings. Michelle will make sure that John Sepenowski (at Town Hall) and Tim at the Inkspot can work together to get map information on the town computer. New funding is available for bicycle trails. $10 million in federal funding is available until September. We should think of ways to utilize this opportunity to enhance our existing trails (ie. Moore's Woods and the Cutchogue-Peconic Link). MT A/LIRR Uodate: Frank, Jamie and Tom were to meet to discuss the LIRR letter of January 23. LIPA Under-Groundim! Review: Verizon would be willing to underground some of their lines. It would cost about $70.000. Elaine McDuffy is looking for funding. There will be a meeting in Jamesport about the high tension lines. Proposed Tree Protocol: Victor provided a draft protocol for trimming, removal, and replanting of town trees. He will show this to the Tree Committee, NYSDOT, Suffolk County DPW, LIPA, Cablevision, and the Town Highway Department. A short discussion revealed that there needs to be more precision in exactly what can be done and by whom, and how coordination among entities will occur. Rte. 25 Gatewav Bridl!e: Ron Kudla of the NYSDOT reportedly will discuss plans for the bridge at a Town Hall meeting between 5 and 9 PM on May 29. We will ask him to meet with us on May 27 at lOAM to bring the Commission up to date on plans for the bridge. Old Business: Victor and Jamie went to the Southold IGA to discuss relocating the entrance to the parking lot. A question arose concerning funding to re-do the lot as it will need to be restriped. They may allow a right-turn-only exit. No trees will be removed to make the new entrance. They may ask private groups to volunteer to dress up the area with landscaping, benches, and trash receptacles. Jamie says the state will re-do the sidewalk but the Commission should also ask for beautification with trees, landscaping and lighting, to be included in the entire State project from Cutchogue to Greenport. Neb suggested that Victor call John Barns, president of the Southold-Greenport Chamber of Commerce. Al Terp, owner of the shopping strip and parking lot in Cutchogue, says no plantings will be allowed on the parking lot. He has not yet signed off on the parking lot. The next meeting will be Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at 10 AM, Southold Town Hall. Respectfully submitted, Margaret H. Brown
