Richter - Hwy. Dept., Arty Foster - Trustee, Ed Buehl- DOT, Ron Kudla - DOT, Elizabeth Chamakkala - DOT,

Gatewav Brid2e Reconstruction Proposal: Ed Buehl, NY SDOT Design Unit Supervisor and three other members
of the NYSDOT Regional office in Hauppauge came to review the plans for the work on the "Gateway Bridge"
on Rte. 25 between Albacore Drive and Pipes Neck Road. A general discussion was held concerning time frame,
wetlands impact including runoff mitigation, height and grade of the bridge, lighting, bicycle and pedestrian
accommodattion, and logistics of travel during construction. The DOT team stressed that the plans are in an
extremely preliminary stage and many details must be studied. Formal preliminary planning is expected to start
in the summer of 2002. Construction could possibly start in 2005 and would probably take upwards of 8 months
to complete. DOT will try to provide a progress report in September.
Rte. 25 Proiect: Jamie Richter asked Mr. Buelh about proposals for Tucker's Lane in Southold. DOT may re-do
that intersection eliminating the traffic triangle and putting in landscaping. The DOT will be working on Rte. 25
from Indian Neck Road in Peconic to Tucker's in Southold in addition to the work already planned further west
on Rte. 25, and may therefore delay the entire project until 2003.
Further on the subject of the Rte. 25 project, a request was made for benches and planting in the Village
of Southold and the DOT is willing to do this but needs drawings of what is desired. Neb reported that the
Chamber of Commerce will provide this information.
Valerie mentioned that there is a need to change the entrance to the parking lot at the Southold IGA in an
effort to prevent accidents. DOT will consider this.
Construction on this project is now slated to begin in the Spring of 2004. However, Supervisor Horton is
anxious to get the pond at the southern edge of Moore's Woods done sooner, in fact as soon as possible, so it may
be necessary to write a letter requesting that this part of the project be accelerated.
SEEDS: There will be a meeting in Calverton on May 23 at 7:30 PM presented by Allee, King Rosen & Heming,
Inc. to give people an opportunity to "assist in mapping out development strategies and scenarios for the region,
not just within your community."
There will be a meeting with the Supervisors and Mayors and the EETC on August 21 in Southampton to
bring everyone up to date.
Bike Trails: Michelle Zaloom has taken over the job of developing the bicycle maps on her own computer
because she believes she can achieve more area-specific guidelines.
LIRR: Neb sent a letter from Brian Dolan of the Long Island Railroad requesting detailed information that will
help the Commission in seeking state funds for upgrading the tracks from Ronkonkoma to Greenport.
Scenic Bvwavs Grant Applications: Two grant applications have been submitted for Scenic Byways projects.
One is for interpretive signage and facilities at key locations within the Town of Southold for $75,000. The other
is for the scenic renovation of the Orient Causeway including placing the wires underground, for $150,000 of
which $30,000 would be the Town's in-kind contribution. These two applications were submitted electronically-
a first for Southold Town. They were snbmitted May 1,2002 at 3:40 PM.
The next meeting will be Monday, June 17,2002 at 10:00 AM, Southold Town Hall.
Respectfully snbmitted, Margaret H Brown
