HomeMy WebLinkAbout09/30/2002 . . Southold Transportation Commission Southold Town Hall September 30, 2002 Present Neb Brashich, Margaret Brown, Frank Field" Ruth Oliva, Victor L'Eplattenier, Lt. Marty Ratley, Southold PO, Donald Wagner, Visitor, Erica Bowers, Traveler Watchman Neb went to the Town Board to give a report on what we have accomplished. The Board wanted to know if we could do better signing for pedestrian crosswalks. Lt. Ratley said the Police Department will give us all the coordinates for the existing crosswalks. SEEDS Uodate: The Mayors and Supervisors are discussing ferry destinations. Seaview Trails: The Commission needs to know the costs projected for the three or four proposed trailhead signs. The map needs to be put on the front burner. Neb wants a final design for the map and the cost of the trail head signs by the next meeting. We need to find a builder for the signs. Neb wants to go into production on the maps. Fishers Island Bike Path: Neb reminded them of our history on the North Fork and suggested that since their roads are private, they might seek private foundation funding. Cox Lane and Rte 48: It might be possible to exit the landfill via Cox Lane. An aerial view of the present layout was sent to the County. There will be more industrial work located on Cox Lane which may make a traffic light there even more important. At present, the thought is to enter the landfill from Rte. 48 and exit from Cox Lane. The Town has received a requ~3t for "No Parking" signs on Cox Lane between Rte. 48 and Oregon Road. Chief Cochran responded that "No Parking" in the whole area might be excessive but would agree to 200' north and south of the intersection with Matthews Lane. This must go to the Town Board for a resolution. The Commission agreed to support this suggestion. Soeed Limits: (I) Residents of Rocky Point Road in East Marion have asked to lower the speed limit from 50 mph to 40 mph. Highway Superintendent Harris asked the Town Board to lower the limits. Lt. Ratley, on behalf of Chief Cochran agrees. The Commission agrees. (2) South Harbor Road Residents have asked that the speed limit be lowered from 35 mph to 30 mph. The speed limit for all of Great Hog Neck is supposed to be 35 mph. The Chief doesn't think reducing the speed limit by 5 mph will really help, but he will put the "Smart Trailer" out to remind drivers to slow down. The Chief s recommendation is to stay at 35 mph but to enforce it more stringently. The Commission agreed. Gatewav Bridl!e: We received an message from Ron Kudla, DOT Project Manager for the "Bridge over LIRR on SR 25, Greenport" that there has been a delay in budgeting and the baseline mapping for the project has not been completed within the original time frame. He hopes the mapping will be completed by mid-October and that preliminary design drawings can be ready by December. We will ask them to come to our October 21 meeting., nonetheless, to show us what they have - with the understanding that this will be extremely preliminary. MT A/LIRR: Frank provided input for Jamie to incorporate in his letter of response to the letter from the LIRR. New Business: Re: Intersection of Rte. 48 and Peconic Lane, Chief Cochran has asked the County to review traffic patterns, accidents, and all fatalities at this spot. This is a dangerous intersection and needs attention. Also, a new nursery school will be opening just west of the Mobil Station on the south side of Rte. 48. This will result in added traffic congestion. Re: Griffin Street, Cutchogue. Ray Huntington has submitted a map offering a possible traffic pattern involving Griffin Street and School House Lane. Re: IGA parking lot in Southold. Victor visited the manager of the IGA to discuss moving the entrance to the parking lot further east. Obstacles, including a tree, a telephone pole and hedges, must be considered. Also, the new plan should try to retain as many parking spaces as possible. The suggested design will be sent to the DOT for inclusion in the resurfacing project. The DOT will include litter cans, benches, light~ and curb cuts in the project. Visitor Donald Wagner stated that he had written letters to Town, County and State officials about the poor condition of the North Road. He blames ferry traffic. He wondered why we can't put pressure on the State to put a ferry terminal in Shoreham on the Sound, and in Riverhead for a ferry to North Sea or Noyac to help alleviate the traffic to the south shore. He also suggested that the DMV should require vision tests at more frequent intervals than every 8 years, especially for depth perception. This could help reduce accidents. The next meeting will be Monday, October 21, 2002, at 9:30 AM, Southold Town Hall. Respectfully submitted, Margaret H. Brown
