Gatewav Bridl!e: The DOT representatives reported that their map for the Gateway Brid~e project waa entered on
Friday. They want to set up a Task Force of around 12 people to work with the commumty to gather input and to
study the beginning design process. They would also like input from Commission members. The committee
should include representatives from the DEC, URR, DOT, Transportation Commission (Frank Field), Planning
Department (Victor L'Eplattenier), Town Trustees, Town Board, Highway Department (Jamie Richter), the
business community, August Acres, and County DPW. The DOT needs a list of names from us. A new meeting
place may be available at the Downs Farm Center in Cutchogue. The committee would probably meet once a
month, with minutes of the meetings going to the Chamber of Commerce and all attendees. In addition, the
Village of Oreenport, and elected officials (Patricia Acampora and Ken LaValle), would need to be kept
informed.
A tentative time table waa proposed: Design Report - MaX '03, Design Approved - Jan '04, Finsl
Plans - Nov '04, Letting Date - Feb '05, Contract Signed - April 05, Construction Start - May '05.
Several possible strategies were discussed for the actual rebuilding process, as well aa attendant costs and
actual bridge construction types (concrete/steel/combination). The DOT will develop them more completely and
present them to the Commission, to the Taak Force and to the Town Board.
SF.P.nS Uodate: All publicity has been geared to the Stakeholders meeting planned for Thursday October 24 in
Flanders..
Seaview Trails: Michelle presented a map prototype. Neb will study it and make recommendations. She will
bring cost information for trailhead boxes (for maps) to the next meeting, as well aa the estimated cost for map
production.
Cox Lane and Rte 48: Nothing new was reported.
Peconic I .ane and Rte. 48: There has been discussion of a traffic light at Peconic Lane. Several people have
talked to Neb about the dangers of this intersection. The concern haa increased with the planned nursery school
1300' west of the intersection. This will be discussed in greater detail at a future meeting.
Crosswalks: Neb baa a list of crosswalks with accidents from Lt. Flatley. He will send this to Frank Pearson,
Acting Regional Traffic Engineer.
MT A/IlRR: Jamie baa sent a proposed memo to Neb. Neb aaked Frank to study it and come back with a
recommendation.
New Bu.ine...: Margaret reported on a meeting with the Tree Committee and the DOT regarding unsafe trees in
Mattituck on the Main Road. Several trees must be removed and will be replaced by the NYSDOT. It is the
Town's responsibility to keep the trees healthy after the rust few months of planting.
The Commission received a letter from John Costello expressing concern about traffic going in and out
of Peconic Landing. We will send a copy of this letter to the County DPW for their input
Margaret brought up the traffic and pedestrian hazards of massive parking along the Main Road during
the Fall harvest weekends.
The next meeting will be Monday, November 25, 2002, at 9:30 AM. Southold Town Hall.
