Southold Transportation Commission
Southold Town HaIl
August 27, 2001
NOV 2 b 2001
",","10"'<1 .own Clerk
Present: Neb Brashich, Margaret Brown, Chief Ty Cochran, Frank Field, Bernie Jacobsen, Jamie Richter,
Michelle Zaloom, Valerie Scopaz, Suzanne Donovan - EE Transportation Coordinator
SEEDS: A paper has been developed to describe SEEDS and what it does. Most public meetings have been held.
The Shelter Island Meeting was excellent with about 50 people in attendance. The Village of North Haven had
only about 3 in attendance. At the Southold Meeting, a good cross-section of ideas and people were represented.
Most signed up for "Stake-holders" committee which will focus on Scenario Development and Testing in the
Summer and Fall of 2002.
A contract was awarded to Ally (?) King. The principal individual involved in the study was Barbara
Jeffries (she previously did the study for the LIRR) but she has been fired by King. The company was selected
because of the capabihties of Ms. Jeffries, so negotiations are underway to have Ms. Jeffries reinstated, or the
contract will be in jeopardy since there was a clause in the contract that we would be notified ahead of time of
any change in the company.
SCDPW: James K. Peterman, PE, Director of Highway Design and Construction and Robert J. Bornholdt,
Director, of the Suffolk County Department of Public Works - Traffic Safety made a follow-up visit after their
visit 2 months ago, to review the resurfacing of Rte. 48 and to consider the comments from the Town responses to
their public presentation. Neb asked that they answer the people's questions. What is the time table for the work?
They said it will begin in the fall of 2003 if they get the right-of-way needed. They will do 2 miles at a time, so
the entire 6 miles will not be tom up at once. The work will extend from Tucker's Lane in Southold to Main
Street in Greenport. Neb also asked them to bring concerns of traffic problems at the Landfill to the attention of
Bill Shannon. Chief Cochran is writing them a letter and says he has met with them several times. They say they
are working on it James Peterman says he has looked at it Neb says the letters have not been answered. Neb
pointed out that we need a way to stay in useful contact with the principals of this project to keep track of what is
going on. He suggested meetings every six months. The Town needs responses and occasional reviews of
outstanding issues. Neb suggested that they be put on the mailing list for Commission meeting announcements.
Valerie reported that negotiations with Jack Levin (Soundview Motel) have been going well regarding the
land trade with the county and it should go ahead with no problems.
Scenic Bvwavs Valerie needs help putting together the Scenic Byways Packet for presentation in Albany on
September 10. Neb and Valerie will go to make the presentation.
Other: The Southwood Property Owners Association have requested a re-design of the exit from Oaklawn
A venue onto the Main Road. They would prefer a "right turn only" designation. A letter was received from
Bernadette M. Petersen asking for installation of a stop light at Depot Lane and Rte. 48. Supervisor Cochran
responded that she has been in contact with Bill Shannon of the SCDPW about a light.
The next meeting will be Monday September 25 at 9:00 AM, Southold Town Hall.
Respectfully submitted, Margaret H. Brown
