Southold Transportation Commission JUL 3 1 2000
Southold Town Hall
June 19,2000 -,...,,,,..,... 'ow' ,;1....
Present: Neb Brashich, Margaret Brown, Bill Cremers, Frank Field, Ray Jacobs, Bernie Jacobson, Ruth
Oliva, Valerie Scopaz, Michelle Zaloom
Transportation Commission: The search for a secretary to be shared with the Commission and the East
End Transportation Council continues. The salary being offered is $8.36 per hour.
Scenic Bvwavs Corridor Manal!ement Plan: We have received a draft of the Nominating Package and
Valerie and Neb will review it. The Supervisor must add a message and it will be sent to the consultant
for finalization. Once finalized, it must be presented to the Town Board for approval, then sent to
Albany for approval. Once approved in Albany, we will have a plan in place that the Town can
administer.
Bicvcle LooDS: Last week the Bicycle Subeommittee (Ruth Oliva, Michelle Zaloom, Neb Brashich, and
Margaret Brown) drove the three loops and one segment of the North Fork Seaview Trails to identify
where signs need to be placed or replaced or repaired. The committee will meet today from 2-4pm to
put all the information on maps. A tentative conclusion of the driving survey is that all the round trail-
marker signs should be the blue used for the markers on the New Suffolk/Oregon Road Loop, because
that color has been the most durable. More "ride in line" and "share the road" signs need to be added for
the safety of cyclists and drivers alike. A list of "rules of the road" could be handed out to all who apply
for parking permits when they are coming to ride, and this list will also be incorporated into the trails
map. One-day parking permits are available at the several of the Town beaches and at several places of
business which are open on weekends: Jamesport Bait & Tackle, Jamesport; Warrens Tackle Center,
Aquebogue; Sound View Scuba, Southold; Eagle's Neck Paddling Company, Southold; Hand's
Station, Orient; and Narrow River Marina, Orient.
East End Transportation Council: The Long Island Transportation Study is presently missing three
components because of an e-mail problem. However, the entire document will be available in Valerie's
office. It must be read and responded to by the end of the week.
Travel Needs Assessment: There will be a meeting of this group this morning to address some of the
requests/needs for improved traffic safety and flow, i.e. Should we develop more with traffic calming
strategies, where should curb cuts be made or removed, etc. Valerie suggested a "no parking" zone be
established at the 7-11 in Greenport and a letter will be sent to the Town Board requesting a resolution
on this subject. Supervisor Cochran will ask the Town Board to request a traffic survey to determine if a
traffic light is necessary at Westphalia Road and Rte. 48 in Mattituck. Mullen Motors is working on
better usage of their site for traffic
Greenport: Valerie attended a meeting in Greenport with the NYSDOT to discuss the proposed
resurfacing of Front Street from 6" Street to Main Street. At present the proposal includes: widening
both sidewalks, widening the travel lanes and parking lane, allowing parking on the North side of the
street only, no parking near comers, adding landscaping, lowering the road bed by 6 inches so that the
curb is higher. The DOT has prepared plans for review.
North Ferrv: The North Ferry Co. is planning for expansion of its traffic-carrying capacity. A new
larger ferry has been designed and is out for bids at 12 shipyards. Upon selection of the building yard,
thc cost will be submitted first to thc Shelter Island Heights Property Owncrs Corporation Board of
Directors and then to the full membership for authorization. This boat, if approved, financed, and built
will be put in service in the summer of 2002.
Other: A letter from Jean Sanford of Locust Lane regarding paving was sent to Ray Jacobs.
The next meeting will be Monday July 31 at 8:30AM, Southold Town Hall.
Respectfully submitted,
Margaret H. Brown
