HomeMy WebLinkAbout03/22/1999 . Southold Transportation Committee Southold Town Hall March 22, 1999 . Present: Neboysha Brashich, Margaret Brown, Victor Brown, Frank Field, George Hubbard, Bernie Jacobson, David Moore, Valerie Scopaz Ferrv Conference: Neb gave a recap of the Ferry Conference. It was attended by about 70 people. He recommended having another conference after the LITP 2000 report comes out, especially on the impact on the East End. It would also be good to have a clearinghouse for the exchange of ideas - perhaps the East End Transportation Committee could provide this function if the Mayors and Supervisors agree. The conference revealed that people from further west are interested in what is happening in terms of transportation out here, particularly which ports should be considered for ferry traffic. Jerry Bogacz, Assistant Director of the New York Metropolitan Transportation Council, would like to come out in June and discuss what conclusions come out of the ENC report. They have an impact on where money is spent. Scenic Byways Management Plan: The last forum for Scenic Byways will probably be in May. The Transportation Committee will hold two forums: one when the Traffic Study results are compiled, and two, for planning the future as a result of the study. East End Transportation Council: The final draft of the ENC Transportation Action Strategy for 1999 has been prepared. It must now be approved by the Mayors and Supervisors association. LIRR: We have been informed that the LIRR is seeking a consultant to do a study to improve service and train utilization on the East End of Long Island, and also to encourage intermodal/multi-modal concepts at railroad stations. They are allocating about $200,000 for the study and proposals are due April 16, with 210 calendar days to do the work. Bicycle Safety: Victor has been promised two free bicycles to use as prizes in the bicycle safety program. All the schools are included in the project (except New Suffolk and Oysterponds), including Our Lady of Mercy Catholic school in Cutchogue. The AAA presenter will come out on three dates: April 19, Southold and Our Lady of Mercy, April 27, Mattituck, and June 8, Greenport. The subject of the presentations will be safety as appropriate for each age group. The children will then be invited to write essays, as a task to do after the presentation and will be rewarded with a strobe light for their bicycles upon completion of their essays. There are about 1725 children involved. We will select three winners from each age group. We need two more Second Prizes and Honorable Mention prizes. The price for the strobe lights is now $1.75 each. Since we need more than the 1500 Victor had anticipated, he will try to get a better price. It was recommended that we order enough lights for all the students and use any left-overs for other vulnerable bicycle riders such as migrant workers. Victor will try to get Second Prizes from the Mattituck Bike Shop. Moore's Woods: George Hubbard reported that surveyors have begun studying what needs to be done to the drainage system through Moore's Woods. The drain will be cleaned after the surveyors give their report. Other Business: Glynis Berry has sent a letter of resignation from the Transportation Committee. Her job is presenting too many time constraints. The next meeting will be Monday, April 19, 8 AM at Southold Town Hall. Respectfully submitted, RlCltYBD Margaret H.
