Southold Transportation Committee
Southold Town Hall
June 21,1999
Present: Neb Brashich, Margaret Brown, Frank Field
LIRR: Frank reported several discouraging facts about the Long Island Railroad and especially service
to the North Fork. Since not all the crews are technically qualified to work on the new equipment, old
trains are sent to the North Fork on weekends. The company in Japan which was building the new trains
has had financial problems because of so many "change orders" and no spare parts are available. When
the rails were improved on the North Fork several years ago, old rails were used which are not heavy
enough for the new engines, creating a problem with rail joints. The engines are also over speculation
on weight so all the bridges have had to be re-done. (That has been done on the North Fork.) The
signals on the North Fork are too close to crossings forcing the trains to travel at a top speed of 45 MPH
instead of 65 MPH.
NYSDOT Route 25 Proposal: The Transportation Committee sent a 2-page response to the NYSDOT in
Hauppauge regarding their proposals for improving Route 25 in Mattituck and Cutchogue after the
meeting May 19 with NYSDOT representatives Mr. Ed Buehl and Ms. Dianne Delgado, Project Officer.
Jean Cochran, Elaine McDuffy, Dick Noncarrow, Maureen Osterman, Neb, and Margaret were in
attendance.
The Traffic Study currently underway covering eastern Riverhead, Southold and Shelter Island is due in
February 2000. We will then have more information to apply to proposals for road improvements.
Scenic Bvways Corridor Mana!!ement Plan: 44 people attended Vision Forum III on June 7, 1999. A
Resolution to the Southold Town Board was unanimously adopted. The draft of the Management Plan
now awaits comments from NYSDOT in Albany. Once these have been received and incorporated, the
Committee will be invited to present it to the Scenic Byways Commission who will also add input.
When that is incorporated, it will go to the Town Board for final approval and will then be sent to the
NYSDOT for inclusion in the State Scenic Byways Program.
Bicycle Safety: The bicycle safety program is in its final stages. The AAA safety presentations,
arranged and scheduled by Victor Brown, have been made at all the schools and the essays are being
read and evaluated by Victor, Neb and Margaret, whowill decide on the six winners. First place winners
in grades 1-3 and 4-6 will receive a new bicycle from the Bike Stop in Greenport, and the second and
third place winners in grades 1-3 and 4-6 will receive bicycle helmets, provided by the Mattituck Bike
Shop. The winners will be presented with their prizes at the Town Board Meeting July 6 at 4:30PM.
Their parents and the press have been invited.
Other Business: If we know people who have an interest in transportation issues we should see if they
are interested in joining the Transportation Committee.
The next meeting will be July 6, 3 PM at Southold Town Hall.
Respectfully submitted,
Margaret H. Brown
