Southold Transportation Committee
Southold Town Hall FEB 29m
December 20, 1999
Present: Neb Brashich, Margaret Brown, Frank Field, Ray Jacobs, Bernie Jac~~nOld 'own Clerk
Transoortation Commission: The establishment process of the commission is before the Town Board
and should be completed in January. We received another letter from Bernadette Peterson regarding the
installation of a traffic light at Depot Lane and Rte. 48. Neb passed the letter on to the highway
department. He also talked to Debbie Orlowski. President of the Mattituck Chamber of Commerce
regarding the truck traffic on Love Lane in Mattituck.
Uodates: The East End Transportation Committee met in early December. A representative of DOT
attended and reiterated the fact that the Traffic Study will commence on January 4,2000. Money to
continue the study will come from Suffolk County Federal funds and the five towns have all agreed to
put in 20% matching funds. Jean Cochran offered the services of Neb and Valerie to go to each of the
other four towns to discuss the work of the council, how to strategize a buy-in of 20%, and how to form
a Transportation Commission. The EETC has been charged with doing consensus building.
It was also decided at the EETC meeting that the first public information meetings will be held in
March. They will probably be held separately in the three North Fork communities inyolved in this part
of the study: Shelter Island, Southold, and Eastern Riverhead - in an effort to get more specific
community input. (Bernie will talk to Dunn Engineering to find out the geographic definition of Eastern
Riverhead.) As to publicity for the meetings, Ray Jacobs believes radio advertising is much more
reasonable, cost-wise, than newspaper ads, and just as effective. From Dunn Engineering we will need a
clear description of the information to be presented at the first set of meetings.
Other: One last thing for the DOT improvement project on Rte. 25: We received a letter from DOT
which seemed to ask for verification that any changes made to their plan were at our (Southold's)
request.
The next meeting will be January 24 at 8AM, Southold Town Hall.
Respectfully submitted,
Margaret H. Brown
