Southold Transportation Committee
Southold Town Hall
November 22, 1999
lown Gfera __
Present: Neb Brashich, Margaret Brown, Lt. Ty Cochran, Frank Field, Bernie Jacobson
Transoortation Commission: Neb talked to Councilman Bill Moore who told him-1hat the code
committee is working on the chapter which will define the Transportation Committee as the
Transportation Commission. As a commission our scope of work will increase, including items which
in the past have gone to the New York State Department of Transportation or the Suffolk County
Department of Public Works. Two new items have already been referred to us:
1) Bernadette Peterson has written a letter requesting that a stop light be installed on Route 48 at
Depot Lane. This request came after an accident involving a school bus.
2) The owner of Barker's Pharmacy on Love Lane in Mattituck has written a letter complaining
of excessive truck traffic on Love Lane. We may want to talk to the Mattituck Chamber of Commerce
because they are trying to improve the overall quality of the Village.
Traffic Stud v: Thc Traffic Study will resume on January 3, 2000. It will.now include not only Southold
Town but also Eastern Riverhead and Shelter Island. (Southampton and East Hampton have done their
own studies.) We will be expected to hold two public meetings - the first in February or March and the
second 6-8 months later when the preliminary report is ready. The purpose of first meeting will be to
inform residents of the results of the summer 1998-99 traffic counts on Rtes 48 and 25 and on Rte 114 in
Shelter Island. All of this information is now available at NYSDOT and Dunn Engineering. They must
discuss their findings with the public. A decision must be made soon regarding the date for the first
meeting and who will be included - i.e. Shelter Island, Southold and part of Riverhead, or whether three
separate meetings need to be held. Bernie will check with people on Shelter Island about their
preferences. At our next meeting we will know when the DOT wants the first meeting.
Scenic Bywavs: We received the Scenic Byways Nomination Package. It is still incomplete. After the
Town hearing and acceptance, Neb and Valerie will take it to Albany to the Scenic Byways
Commission. It is hoped that a series of projects funded by State or Federal grants will flow out of this.
NYSDOT Route 25 Imorovement: Neb and Lt. Cochran met with DOT representatives for more
discussion of the plans for Rte. 25, resulting in more revisions in the name of safety. The main problems
remaining are the intersection at Main Road and Oaklawn A venue in Southold and the median in front
of the King Kullen shopping plaza in Cutchogue. The DOT will go back to their legal experts with
regard to striped medians and get back to us.
East End Transportation Council: There has been a call by several representatives on the Council to
review their approach to become more effective as a Council. Valerie will work on a review its basic
scope and possible ways to restructure.
The next meeting will be December 20 at 8AM, Southold Town Hall.
Respectfully submitted,
Margaret H. Brown
