Scenic Bvwavs: Public Meeting #\ to kiek off the Scenic Byways Program will be held on
Thursday, December 4, 7:00-9:30PM at the Southold Presbyterian Church. David Moore will
prepare a synopsis of the contract to be distributed at the meeting, Margaret will be a greeter.
Trails: Several issues are still pending, Neb has seen no more progress on signing the Mattituck
loop. We need to check on this, The off-road trail along the railroad tracks between Mattituck
High School and Depot Lane needs to be studied. Neb suggests that we go to the Peconic Land
Trust. He talked to Tim Caufield and thinks we should try to get their help in designing the trail
and acquiring rights of way.
It was decided to use a light blue for the signs linking the various bicycle loops between
Mattituck and Orient.
We need to decide the placement of the trailhead signs at the railroad stations.
Moore's Woods: A HUD grant to the Village of Greenport is being released to clean up the canal
through the woods, Valerie wondered if some of the money could be used to improve security in
the woods,
East End Transportation Committee: Valerie reported that there could be a tie-in with the EETC
and the DOT Traffic Study set to begin in ApriL Also, we need a transportation plan to give the
DOT, Valerie needs an estimate of what traffic would be on the North Fork if we had full
"build-out" and how long that will take to happen.
Committee Fundin!!: The Planning Board has put $75,000 in the new budget for new
transportation planning, We need to consider specific t~ansportation problems now to make
practical, enduring plans and decisions for fifty years into the future, Need to look at each
hamlet more closely: what are the traffic patterns, where should municipal parking be to reduce
car use, how can public transit be best used, plus many more details that will become clear as the
issue is studied,
Geor!!e Hubbard - Greenport Villa!!e Liaison: He reported on a visit by a DOT team looking into
where parking is going to be in Greenport, A decision has not been made--perhaps in the back of
stores if four houses can be removed. The State will help with costs because they are getting
more space on Front Street.
North Ferry Survey: Bernie reported that the results of the survey are still in draft form and not
yet available for public use,
Holiday Party: The Transportation Committee is invited to the Town Christmas Party, Friday
December 5. The cost is $10 per person. RSVP by Wednesday, December 3,
The next meeting will be Monday, December 15, 1997,8 AM at Southold Town HalL
Respectfully submitted,
