Scenic ByWavs' Steerina Committee will meet on Januarv 21 for a ioint session with
other sub-arouos. The steering committee met on January 5. A resolution was
proposed to the town board and adopted, so the group now has officially been
charged with its mission.
The consultant has been asked to create a list of benefits -- financial and otherwise --
that may accrue to the town if scenic byway status is granted. The list will be used to
influence the town board and individuals. The next meeting called "Vision II" will be
held in early March.
Neb. Melissa Spiro and Barbara met with Tim Caulfield of Peconic Land Trust with the
hooe of enlistina PL 1's helD in easement olannina for off-road trails. Tim presented
the plan to his board of directors; the directors spent an hour and a half considering
the merits, but they did not reach a conclusion. Melissa is working on a priority list of
properties for acquisition. She will put the off-road trails on the list. Neb asked
George to set a date for the walk in Moore's Woods with members of Greenport Village
board.
East End Transoortation Council met on Jan. 4th. Regional director of NYSDOT,
Richard Schmoltz was present as was new liaison Mary-Anne Kost. The group set
parameters for discussing the arterial management report. It also made
recommendations for work for 1998. At February meeting these proposals will be
voted on and, if ratified, will be presented at Supervisors/Mayors meeting later in
February. EETC would like to get Department of Public Works and Lilco involved in
their efforts. Victor had mentioned General Electric Co.'s willingness to help with a
lighting survey. GE will be invited to speak with EETC.
Georae reoorted that DOT installed ooles for traffic liahts on Villaae orooertv without
consent and in such a wav as to imoede wheelchair access. Valerie offered to call
Mary-Anne KosI.
Valerie is aoina before the town board to oresent a summarv of the olannina
deoartment's work in 1997 and olans for 1998. She will give a copy to STTC.
On Feb. 5. there will be a meetina with Connecticut olanners to discuss issues of
reaional concern (ie. imoact of ferries on U).
Bernie will deliver a oaoer on his outlook on business oossibilities for hiah soeed
ferries in the US. He sees little chance of success in areas where the infrastructure is
already well-developed except under special circumstances. Someone else wil speak
about water taxi service.
STTC members will work on the list of scenic places for trail head signs at next
meeting to be held on February 23 at 8:00 AM in Town Hall.
