Southold Town derl< Southold Transportation Committee Southold Town Hall May 11, 1998 8:00 AM Present: Neboysha Brashich, Glynis Berry, Margaret Brown, Victor Brown, Frank Field, Bernie Jacobson, Barbara Michelson, David Moore, Valerie Scopaz, Melissa Spiro Vision Forum II: Neb reported that 80-90 people attended the Forum. The speakers were good. We have received a draft of the meeting results and Neb and Valerie will write a reply to Ferrandino later today. The Advisory Committee members have seen the report and the general consensus is that tourism should not be our main goal. Both Neb and Steve Ridler agree that this point needs to be clearly made to Ferrandino. Elaine McDuffee, recipient of the $250 prize for "worst view" picture, has donated her winnings to the Transportation Committee. Bicvcle Routes: Neb and Valerie drove the Bayview Loop in Southold. They feel ten signs could be eliminated and 5 or 6 others could be repositioned. Wherever possible, our signs should be put on other existing sign posts. There have been several complaints about our signs in Orient. The community needs to be educated about the reasons for our attempts to inform and organize bicycle riders in town, with particular emphasis on safety and mutual respect. Glynis is working on a sign policy. We will meet with the chairman of the Orient Association, two meetings from now, after Glynis has worked out this policy and it has been adopted by the Transportation Committee (unless it needs to be reviewed/approved by the Town Board). An agreement has been reached whereby we will be allowed to have a bicycle trail through Moore's Woods with trail from Queen Street across to Moore's Lane. The Long Island Railroad will now have more bicycle accessibility on some trains. They will allow 6 to 8 bikes on trains on off-peak hours and there will be a few 20 to 30-bike trains to the East End on weekends. Fort Corchau!!: We have received a letterfrom the Peconic Land Trust with cost estimates of roads and trails. They would like our help in developing trails in the public access section of the preserve. Neb has been in contact with the National Park Service and they are interested in helping with this project. Barbara and Margaret will continue to work on this. Peconic Dunes: Neb met with Richard Hilary in regard to coordinating bicycle and kayak usage of the Peconic Dunes Camp with our bicycle route along Soundview A venue. A proposal will be made to the Suffolk County Department of Parks to use some ISTEA funding to refurbish some aspects of the camp and connect our trail system to the camp. Neb gave him a copy of our Seaview Trails proposal. Cyclists could use the park for picnicking, showers, eating in the dining hall, and overnight stays in certain cabins, most likely off season. There will also be kayak launch sites on the lake and probably also on the Sound. Kavaks: Margaret will work with David and Neb on a better kayak proposal, made in partnership with the County. It will include the above mentioned launch sites at Peconic Dunes, as well as others defined in our original Kayak Proposal. The deadline for filing is June 1, 1998. Other Business: Valerie needs our comments on the draft of the Scope of Services for the North Fork Transportation Study for the Towns of Riverhead and Southold to be submitted to the DOT. She must hear from us by June I. We received a message from Toni Booth that there is a dangerous curve on North Sea Drive which is hazardous to walkers and cyclists. We will refer this problem to the Highway Department. The next meeting will be Monday, June 22, 8 AM at Southold Town Hall. Respectfully submitted, Margaret H. Brown
