Southold Transportation Committee Southold Town Hall January 17, 1996 Present: Mike Acebo, Neboysha Brashich, Margaret Brown, Victor Brown, Dwayne Early, Barbara Michelson, Valerie Scopaz Neb Reoort - Neb will meet with the new Town Supervisor, Jean Cochran Thursday at 11:30 AM to brief her on the Transportation Committee. He will also go to Hauppauge to find out about the status of Traffic Study and the Road Runoff Mitigation study. The Scope of Services for the Traffic Study has been approved. The fate of the Scenic Byways Study funding remains uncertain. Neb has spoken to the deputy at DOS and some determination should come in ten days. Neb will explain the situation to Supervisor Cochran. ~ - Neb talked to Ray Jacobs who reported that John Cushman will transfer the funds for the Seaview Trails signs to a 1996 account He has tried to reach the 3M representative. He will type the purchase orders this week and plans to be ready to install the signs when the ground thaws. The New Suffolk Civic Association will work with us on the large directional sign planned for New Suffolk. They will give up to $200 toward the sign and would like to incorporate something of New Suffolk history on the lower part It was suggested that a similar approach should be taken with the Oysterponds Historical Society. Margaret will speak to the Southold Historical Society to find out who makes their signs. Barbara will try to have Paul Kreiling give a presentation on his sign ideas for the trail-head signs at the next meeting. Approval of the ISTEA oro2l'3Ill fundin!! will probably be announced around March 1. We need to be prepared to move quickly when this happens. The subcommittee on trails should look over Phase II to decide what will be needed of the consultant so that we will be prepared when it is time to interview candidates. The subcommittee will meet soon. Nati?nal Park Service - Neb will call and let them know that we are still interested in their trail design services. Greenoort - There was a discussion of street lighting and other amenities in Greenport. Dwayne said that the Village would eventually like to bury the power lines on Main and Front Streets and place Victorian poles like those in back of the old IGA. It may be possible to find funds that could be matched by store owners and business people. Dwayne will look into a meeting with John Costello, Mayor Kapell, and Neb to talk about lighting, lavatories at the museums, etc. Perhaps a part of the Corridor Management Plan could be focused on Greenport, with certain improvements included as projects to be done. It was suggested that someone from the Transportation Committee attend the monthly meetings of the Greenport Merchants' Committee. Dwayne suggested the development of an environmentally sensitive golf course in the area between Rtes 25 and 48 somewhere between Chapel Lane and Drossos. There are about 600-700 acres there. The Nature Conservancy is interested as are Supervisor Cochran and Councilman Bill Moore. Further discussion revealed that there could be many uses of this area: hiking, horse back riding, bicycling, kayakinglcanoeing, bird watching, or a 3-9 hole golf course. Valerie will discuss the idea with Dick Ward. This will be a good subject for the consultant. Mike reported that the Greenport Village Board has agreed to split the cost of placing bullet-proof plastic windows in the bus shelter with Bob Brown. Merle is still working on reviving the Marine Railway. The property may be owned by NY State. The next meeting will be Tuesday, February 6, 1996 at 4PM in Southold Town Hall. Respectfully submitted, Margaret H. Brown
