Southold Transportation Committee
Southold Town HaIl
February 6,1996
Present: Mike Acebo, Neboysha Brashich, Margaret Brown, Robert Brown, Victor Brown, Dwayne Early,
Barbara Michelson; Valerie Scopaz, Paul Kreiling, Heather Tetrault
Si!!n Reoort: Paul Kreiling, graphic artist, was invited to attend this meeting to discuss signs for the bicycle
l?<?ps. He suggested that we color-code and number each loop using a larger sign at each transportation hub
delmeating the specific route with smaller signs, numbered and in color, throughout each loop as guides to
cyclists. He suggested that we provide maps at the hubs in Plexiglas boxes for the riders. He will do a
prototype to show us the trail-head sign with a map for a loop and proposed trail markers. He suggested using
simple iconic shapes. He will give us a written proposal and possible symbols and prices as well as cost breaks
for quantity and size of signs.
Neb Reoort: Neb reported that he met this morning with the Town Board at their work session. He briefed the
new Town Board on our activities to date and our goals for the future. He will continue working with the
Regional Director of DOT in Hauppauge and the Suffolk County Public Works to further our projects.
Dwayne Early reported on a meetin!! held yesterday in Greenoort. It was a consortium of those involved in
transportation and tourism in Greenport: Gayle Marriner-Smith of Save the Bays, a representative from Cornell
Cooperative Extension, three representatives from LIRR, John Costello and Barbara Heany from the Village of
Greenport, Valerie Scopaz from the Town of Southold, Mike Acebo representing the Greenport Business
Improvement District, Frank Field of the Railroad Museum, and Robert Brown of Sunrise Bus. Restroom
facilities, a turnaround area for ferries, traffic control, general renovation and revitalization of the area, and
LIRR's responsibility for the parking lot, drainage problems, and renovations for the new bi-level trains-new
platforms and new shelters, were all discussed. The LIRR will bring a proposal for the new station next month
and seemed willing to work with the Village.
The Transportation Committee may find the Cornell Cooperative Extension ideas on landscaping and
composting public restrooms helpful. There is money available for creative thinking. However, it was
suggested that a comJ?Osting public restroom should not be placed in the Village of Greenport since the Village
has a sewage system m place. Such an innovative device would be more appropriately placed at Cedar Beach or
Truman's Beach.
Mike will re-submit the Kayak LaWlch funding proposal.
Neb called our attention to a handout called "All Roads Lead to Scenic Byways '96" - vis a vis applying for a
grant through the American Greenways DuPont A wards Program. These range in value from $50()..$2500 and
are jointly sponsored by the Conservation Fund and DuPont. Valerie suggested that we ask for a list of projects
that have been fWlded in the last 5 years to get an idea of what DuPont supports. Neb will contact the program
to ask for the list and see if the deadline has been extended.
Margaret reported 01\ the cost of bronze si!!OS for our bicycle routes. According to the Southold Historical
Society, a 20" x 24" sign cost $600 in December 1994. It was made by the United States Bronze Sign Company
in New Hyde Park, NY.
The Trails Subcommittee (Mike, Victor, Barbara, Dwayne, Neb) met to develop a scope of services for Phase II
to seek consultancies. Two segments, Vineyard View Trail and Oregon Road Trail were discussed. Valerie will
look at the draft and correct for language.
The Town has received a $4000 planning grant from the Rural New York Grant Program 1996. They may be
able to help finance the Moore's Woods segment of the bicycle route. We sbould have National Park Service
plans ready so that we are prepared to apply at the next application opportunity.
Neb asked us to consider having a 5- Town Transportation Symposium.
The next meeting will be February 27, 1996 at 4PM in the Town Hall Conference Room.
Respectfully submitted, Margaret H. Brown
