Reoort from Neb: Last Wednesday (May 15), there was a meeting in Riverhead with the mayors and
supervisors of the East End towns and villages to discuss transportation needs. This is the first time
transportation concerns have been formally discussed by the five towns and all the villages. Particularly at issue
were:
1. How to handle the railroad;
2. What to do about the "light Rail" initiative (as proposed in the EEEC Governor's Report);
3. Scheduling of the county busses and the swnmer trial minibus service in East Hampton.
Riverhead reported that Tanger Mall has initiated trolley service but thus far it is not very successful. The
general consensus was that there is a need for better scheduling, as well as better resolution of the train platfortn
and shelter design. They will meet again and pledged to work together.
Neb called the Open Space Institute in New York. Letters will come out in mid-June with regard to our
Kayak Proposai.
Neb called the Scenic Byways director in Albany to find out where we stand with the grant. He will
follow up tomorrow.
Si!!ll Re~: Paul Kreiling brought new cost estimates for the signs. The committee decided to have color
coded CIrcle markers with "stick-on" arrows to show direction. Kreiling has suggested colors for each segment,
but he will bring more colors to the next meeting. The arrows are a grayish reflective material and have a life
span of five to seven years. He also showed us a design for the pedestal sign for New Suffolk. Margaret
reported that a local historical society had a slightly smaller bronze sign made for considerably less money than
he was quoted. He will look into this company and will also revise the costs to take into consideration the fact
that there will be three pedestal signs. Neb will ask the New Suffolk Civic Association, the Southold Historical
Society, and the Orient Historical Society for monetary assistance in producing these signs.
Neb will ask Ray Jacobs to do a purchase order for trail marker signs, arrows, trail head signs, and the
desi goer fee for a total of $6,825.
The Paul Kreiling and/or the committee will come up with a simple version for the brochure/map to be
placed at each trail head, possibly in a water-proof box. This map will be available free of charge to users of the
trail.
Neb, Margaret and Victor will work on finalizing the bicycle route sign inventory on Thursday, May 23.
National Park Service Reoort: Ray, Dwayne, and Neb will meet to decide how to work with the National Park
Service. The Transportation Committee, the Village of Greenport , and Village bnprovement Committee are
the three entities which will decide when, where, and how to "set up shop". The National Park Service will act
only as a consultant service. They will not do actual work. They will provide the blueprints of how to make the
project happen including design, selecting personnel, and how to organize the work.
Jet Skis : Barbara Michaelson has written a statement regarding jet skis. We have a memo from Carolyn Zenk.,
attorney for the Group for the South Fork. She has written a proposal for regulations pertaining to jet skis.
Bernie Jacobsen brought a legal report from Shelter Island on jet ski regulations adopted April 17, 1996. Neb
will draft a memo for a possible Southold code change on jet skis.
Bernie brought the committee a report entitled "fransit Planning and Research Programs" by the Federal Transit
Program. a part of the US DOT. This may help us in seeking futUre funding.
The next meeting will be June 12, 1996 at 4PM in the Town Hall Conference Room.
Respectfully submitted, Margaret H. Brown
