Railroad Stations: Neb reviewed the latest URR plans for the stations in Southold and Mattituck,
They expect to start work during the second week of August and will be finished in 90 days. We can
choose our own planting and the placement of lockers. For lighting, the URR will use "Bishop's
Hook" lamps. Glynnis talked to a consultant in New Jersey about the basics of railroad stations:
lighting, parking, bathrooms, a clock, etc. She also discussed making them "places" like plazas that
could be used for special events and as transportation hubs. We must identify who will be responsible
for maintenance. The committee did not like the proposed bicycle lockers because they were large,
physically unattractive and could be used by only one person at a time for an indefinite period. The
preference would be for racks with a protective canopy in a visible (and therefore more secure)
location. Glynnis reported that some low-ridership stations have a concierge on duty when the trains
arrive. Some also have carts with food, flowers, and papers, and in Seaside, NJ there are kiosks that
can be locked between trains.
Neb mentioned that the stations must me low-maintenance and therefore will all be the same color
throughout the North Fork.
The Supervisor may try to get a volunteer group/committee together to take care of the stations.
Signs: Margaret suggested a new version of the circle-arrow signs. He will try to do a prototype of
this idea. He reported that the trailhead signs can now be done with a computer and would cost under
$300 per sign plus framing. They would last 7 years. His estimate for brochures is $1500 for the
design and $.5000 for printing 10,000 copies. Victor, Margaret, and Glynnis will be on the committee
to design the brochure. He gave us estimates and diagrams for all of his sign proposals, which are
attached.
At the next meeting, Valerie will brief us on the Town's position on Cross Sound Ferry traffic.
The first meeting of the new East End Transportation Committee will meet on Shelter Island tomorrow
and Neb will report on that.
The next meeting will be August 27, 1996 at 4PM, Southold Town Hall.
Respectfully submitted, Margaret H. Brown
