Present: NeboYsl1a Brasich, Victor Brown, Duane Early, Bernie Jacobsen, Barbara

Bus Service Discussed: Bernie and Neb attended~' meeting of the East End
Transportation Council. Suffolk Co.unty Dept. of Transportation sent a representative
to discuss bus service on the East End. They learned that Suffolk County buys buses
($200,OOO/each), sets fares and subcontracts the operation. Capital costs are paid by
. the federal government (80%), state (10%) and county (10%).
Federai Disability Act requires that buses come within 3/4 mile of everyone.
80% of the POPUlace is currently within the 3/4 mile zone. Fourteen smaller buses
serve people with special needs outside the zone.
In Suffolk County, 160,000 people ride the bus each day. 80% of. riders do not
have a car available; 20% are teenS,students and seniors. 20% of total use the buses
mainly to get to work.
Current service on the East End COnsists of one buslhour. Feeder buses have
been tried, but were found unsuccessful. Express buses to Ronkonkoma are being
contemplated. A member of SITC Proposed that such a bus also stop at Mac Arthur
airport.
Reasons for low rate of use were discussed. Buses' low socio-economic image
. keeps some people from riding. Bl,Is riding is time consuming. .
