Southold Town Transportation Committee
Southold Town Hall
May 16, 1995
Present: Mike Acebo, Neboysha Brashich, Bob Brown, Victor Brown,
Barbara Michelson, Merle Wiggin
Neb reported that he spoke with David Glass who was delighted we got the $ from
Southold Town to begin building trails. David Glass will be coming to Southold on
5/25 at 9:00 AM (possibly bringing someone with him) to be briefed on our plans for
the trails.
Neb cautioned us in making a proposal to not get into the same trap as
Southampton by asking for $ for work not on state roads. If we do that the $ can only
come from ISTEA funds. The application deadline is July 1 st.
Bob Brown will provide a van for taking Mr. Glass around. Victor will get something
in writing from Carl Beard of NYS Park Service in reference to Moore's Woods trail.
As to the execution of Phase I projects for which funding has been authorized, Neb
will open an account. Ray Jacobs will handle the work. The Transportation
Committee may have oversight of any aspects we feel we need.
Dr. Brady called Tom Wickham. He wants to set up a walking program for Senior
Citizens and would like to appear at our next meeting to discuss this idea.
Neb will order a book offered by the Tristate Transportation Campaign about
promoting cycling and walking and improving safety as done in England, Holland and
Germany.
Barbara Michelson will return letter from Mary Mulcahy at Audobon Society
expressing a negative opinion about putting bike trails in Moore's Woods.
Kevin Christy will be our intern for summer and he will be present at our next
meeting.
Ray Van Etten will be the new Greenport Iiasan at our meetings.
Neb called Washington, D.C. about the regional meeting on National Scenic
Byways which will be held in Albany on June 9th-10th. No financial assistance is
available. The registration fee is $25.
On the traffic study, the scope of services was sent to Edward Petra, Regional
Director of NYS Department of Transportation. The request for accelerating the
contracting process was made.
Bob and Merle will need to decide how they will divide up time to attend meetings.
Neb asked Victor to advise Greg Blass that western Riverhead will be covered in traffic
study.
Mike offered to draft a letter on Greenport crosswalks for Mayor Kapell's signature.
Tom Wickham will add his own letter, and DOS will be requested to do the work.
Merle will help Bob get the bus shelter fixed yet again. Bob will supply materials if
Village will install them.
The idea of a newspaper column on safety written by the chief of police was revived.
U. Conway might do the writing; Merle will ask him. AAA publishes suitable articles.
We coukld ask Mark Kulewitz for permission to exerpt. Neb will as Tom Wickham to
. ,

.
make a formal request of the police department. Tom Wickham and the Police Chief
will be invited to the next meeting.
Merle asked what is happening with shoulder paving on Route 25 east of Greenport.
Neb said according to the bid there is supposed to be a shoulder for bikes and signs
every so often. The idea of introducing ourselves to the new project engineer was
discussed.
Merle reported that ISTEA funding for rebuilding the marine railway was denied
because no direct link to surface transportation was found. He asked Transportation
Committee to give its support. He will supply resolution whereby Transportation
Committee asks Town to endorse the project.
Committee will promote trails at the hospitality fair on Thursday May 18th.
Jamie Richter will be asked for a new drawing about widening Soundview Ave.
Victor wants to keep this project active. Neb is willing to raise it again with Ray Jacobs.
Our next regular meeting will be Tuseday, June 6 at 4 PM in Town Hall.
Respectfully submitted,
Barbara Michelson
