A meeting with officials from the Long Island Railroad is planned for Thursday, October 19, 1995 at !0:30AM The purpose of the meeting will be to discuss using part of the Railroad right- of-way in Cutchogue and Mattituck, and in Greenport for bicycle trail links. Greenport should be viewed as a destination as well as a transportation hub. The three main points to be addressed will be: I) the feasibility of utilizing 1/2 mile between Mill and Depot Lanes in Mattituckl Cutchogue; 2) in Greenport, the possible use of the south portion of the railroad from Silvermere Road to the train station; and 3) a joint effort in a marketing and economic study using Greenport as a destination point in an effort to increase ridership. For the meeting, copies of the trails, scenic byways and corridor management plan, and traffic study proposals will be made available to the LIRR guests. Valerie suggested drawing up a site plan of the parking area at the train station to safely route walkers and cyclists to the museums, train, ferry, and bus. Barbara Michelson will provide lunch, which will be served at the Maritime Museum. During their visit, the Railroad representatives will be taken on walking tours of the segments of railroad under discussion. Sunrise Bus will be asked to provide a minibus for transportation to these sites. It was suggested by Dwayne that key people in the Greenport BID, Chambers of Commerce, the Southold Town Promotion Committee, Greenport Village, the Seaport and Marine Foundation, and the Shelter Island Ferry companies all write letters of interest and support which could be presented to the LIRR people during lunch. Neb, Valerie, and Ruth Oliva will attend the North East Regional Planning Conference in New London on Monday, Oct. 16. The first segment of the conference will focus on transportation. Our interest is that tourism to Long Island is being promoted in Connecticut but no transportation plans are in place. The Town Parks, Beaches. and Recreation Committee will meet tomorrow (Thursday, Oct 12) at 4PM to discuss their comprehensive plan for beaches and parks for the whole Town. Dwayne discussed a Greenbelt idea. It would encompass an area from Albertson Lane to Moore's Lane, and from the Sound to the Bay. Much of this area contains open space and fresh water wetlands. Investigation into ownership of the parcels needs to be made, and a field trip to explore the area is essential. No word has been received to date regarding letter sent from the Transportation Committee to the SCSR (Southold Citizens for Safe Roads). In terms of the impact of transportation on marketing and promotion on the East End, Neb asked Ray to summarize on one piece of paper how he attracted visitors to the Grumman Festival. and how large a response he got. The Maritime Festival attracted about 15,000. Bernie Jacobson suggested that there be better coordination between the LIRR and businesses (and special events) in Greenport so that when special excursion trains come out, there are activities for visitors and arrangements for local transportation. Respectfully submitted. Margaret H. Brown
