Southold Transportation Committee
Southold Town Hall Conference Room
January 10, 1995
Present: Mike Acebo, Neboysha Brashich, Margaret Brown, Victor Brown, Barbara Michelson,
Merle Wiggin, Rich Caggiano (late); Steve Ridler
Neb reported on a letter from the Countryside Institute which is offering the services of the
"British Trust for Conservation Volunteers" . A group of 12 - 15 English volunteers would
spend two weeks working on an environmental project in Southold Town. We would provide
food, lodging, equipment, and the plan of work. We must have our application by the end of
February if we wish to participate.
Traffic Study Report: Wc are waiting to hear from Walter Dunn Assoc. on the contract.
Trails Report:
Victor reported that the committee needs to do more investigation into several aspects of
trails. He spoke with Mike Botini from Group for the South Fork on the trail system they are
developing. The $650,000 they were to receive from the state has been rescinded by the new
administration but they plan to move ahead any and are seeking larger funding from DOT. NeD
will check with Dave Glass as per our own funding.
The Trails committee is still unfocused. They would like to come up with a larger plan
with off-road (non-vehicular) trails, and do not feel the two or three proposed trail sites are
adequate. Neb charged the committee to draw up a 2-phase plan with short term and long tel111
(off road) elements. The next meeting will be devoted exclusively to the Trails Project.
Neb will call the L1RR and suggest a more appropriate and substantial structure to replace the
station shelter in Southold which blew down in the December st0l111.
Steve Ridler, Department of State, was present for the last part of our meeting and reported that
his office is working hard to get our project underway. He will attach a letter to the RFP giving
more of the flavor of the community - possibly the article in the Suffolk Times giving the
Stewardship Task Force report. DOS will work up a rating system to use in choosing a suitable
consultant. He also brought several articles which Neb will copy and share at the next meeting.
Merle expressed continuing concern about the damaged bus shelter in Greenport. Rich C. will
look into it in terms of the Village's responsibility. Merle received the support of the committee
in his offer to meet with the Southold Police Chief to encourage him to write a monthly column
on traffic safety for the local paper(s).
A discussion of the Orient Causeway and its use as a scenic viewpoint resulted in the request to
find out from Ray Jacobs who has responsibility for the area beyond the 8 feet of roadway in
DOT's jurisdiction. Can the town put parking spaces here? Merle will ask the Oysterponds
Historical Society if they would re-locate the historic signs on the Causeway to make them more
visible.
lt was felt that the committee should plan a trip to the DOT office in Hauppauge soon for an
update on their projects on the North Fork.
Our next meeting will be Tuesday, January 17 at 4PM, Town Hall Conference Room
Respectfully submitted,
Margaret Brown
