Southold Transportation Committee
Minutes -June 17, 1994
Present: N. Brashich, B. Bayley, M. Brown, V. Brown
The new map showing the bicycle links and routes has been finished by Bob, and it has
been submitted with the necessary paperwork to the Department of Transportation for
funding as the Town of Southold Alternative and Recreational Trail Projects - 1994.
Neb reviewed the contents of the packets that will be given to the new members of the
committee at our meeting June 24.
The following candidates have been approved by the Town Board as of June 21,1994:
Mike Acebo
Barbara Michelson
Mr and Mrs Bob Brown (they will alternate)
Merle Wiggin was interviewed by Ruth Oliva and Neb, and he will be recommended for
approval by the Town Board. Gail Horton did not come for the scheduled interview and
an attempt will be made to reschedule, or to seek another candidate.
Plans were made for the dinner to follow the June 24 meeting. The dinner will be held at
Neb's house in New Suffolk, and it will begin at 6PM. Spouses will be invited. We will
also invite Valerie Scopaz, Melissa Spiro, and Martha from the Planning Department.
Plans were discussed for the June 24 meeting.
Neb will give an overview and lead us through the history of the last 18+ months.
Margaret will discuss the Transportation Core Concept. Bob will discuss the Scenic
Highway Designation effort, and Bob and Victor will review the bicycles/trails segment
using the map to show links. Margaret will talk about the symposium now scheduled for
September, and Neb will address the issue offunding grants and future plans. It is
important that we identify the priority areas of concentration for the next three months,
including details of the Transportation Symposium, specific issues to be addressed by the
Traffic Study, and the Scenic Byway Corridor Management Plan.
Margaret will compose an agenda for the June 24 meeting.
As many members of the committee as possible should be at Town Hall July 1,
9 AM, for the Department of State presentation of the $50,000 grant.
Neb suggested hiring retired people who have expertise in planning, engineering, design,
etc., as a way of making more efficient use of the grant money. (Victor suggested Phillip
Herr, a planner from Shelter Island)
At the June 24 meeting we will discuss a regular time, date, and place of future meetings.
Respectfully submitted,
Margaret H. Brown
