Southold Transportation Committee
Southold Town Hall - 4 PM
Minutes - July 19, 1994
RECFMD
JUL 26 '994
Southold Town Clerk
Present: Mike Acebo, Neboysha Brashich, Bob Brown, Margaret Brown, Barbara
Michelson, Merle Wiggin
Neb handed out several items for study and discussion:
* A copy of the July 14 article in The Traveler Watchman regarding the
Transportation Symposium;
* Two articles from Newsday including a story about the East End Fall Festival
and a story about the LIRR l60th Anniversary;
*A Memo from Supervisor Tom Wickham asking for our input on the street
lighting issue, as per the Stewardship Task Force recommendations. Neb will write an
answer to Supervisor Wickham saying that we will not be ready to make
recommendations until our committee has had more time to study the issue;
* The Scenic Roads Resolution with the narrative and evaluation from our
original attempt to have Route 25 designated as a scenic highway;
* "Scenic Byways", the report of the advisory committee meeting from the US
DOT (attended by Neb, Bob, and Victor in Wash. D.C.). This report has become the
"bible" for scenic road designation and we should study it carefully.
* A copy of the summary of the residents' comments from the One Town, Many
Places Hamlet Meeting(s) held April), 1994.
Neb then made a strong statement about our meetings. He said that we meet from 4
to 6PM, and each member should make every !!!!!!1 to be on time, as there is much
to cover at each meeting. Members should call ahead if they will be late or absent.
Members shm;l<J dso come prepared with whatever "homework" has resulted from
the previous mc"ting. Discussions should be kept on the subject at hand and not
allowed to waml'. .
It was suggested that we divide the Corridor project into 3 sections, using a map. For
example, Orient to Greenport, Greenport to Cutchogue, Cutchogue to Laurel could be
sections. Neb will try to get maps like those used by the Stewardship Task Force to use
as tools.
We will schedule a field trip soon so that we can see exactly what needs to be considered
for the Corridor project. Bob Brown offered to provide a van. Before the field trip, small
committees will survey specific areas: Mike and Merle will do Orient to Greenport; Neb,
Bob Brown, and Victor will do New Suffolk to Laurel; Barbara and Margaret will do
Southold, Peconic and Cutchogue. During these surveys, the following qualities or
values should be kept in mind: Cultural, Agricultural/Open Space, Scenic, Historical.
In addition, particular notice should be taken of the residents' comments from the Hamlet
Meetings for each particular hamlet.
The next meeting will be Tuesday, July 26, 1994 at 4PM in the Southold Town Hall.
Respectfully submitted,
Margaret H. Brown
