Southold Transportation Committee
Southold Town Hall - 4 PM
Minutes -September 20, 1994
Present: Mike Acebo, Bob Bayley, Neboysha Brashich, Bob Brown, Margaret Brown,
Victor Brown, Gail Horton, Barbara Michelson
Neb reported on a meeting he and Margaret attended with Steve Ridler of the
Department of State on Tues. Sept. 19. The main focus of that meeting was to try and
impress upon the DOS that we need flexibility in our preparation of the Scenic Corridor
Management Plan. Specifically, we are not inclined to hire one consultant to do the
entire plan. Also, we have been informed that we cannot use $3200 from the $50,000
grant to hire a consultant to help prepare the plan.
It was decided that we will send a packet of the accomplishments to date of the
Transportation Committee to demonstrate to DOT and DOS that we are capable of doing
serious and comprehensive work. After the Symposium, we will also draw up an outline
to develop the Management Plan. Steve Ridler stopped by toward the end of our meeting
and reported that he can probably line up some consultants we would be comfortable
with. They are issue- and design-oriented, with very innovative ideas. They have
worked with Hudson Valley and St. Lawrence Trail projects. He said that we are on the
leading edge of scenic byway activity in the state. There may be some interest in the state
in creating a scenic loop which would include the South Fork.
The remainder of the meeting was devoted to plans for the Symposium. Gail is
working on the program booklet. She needs writers. Tentatively, Bob Brown will do
something on buses including photos, Joe Fischetti will be asked to write about air travel,
Merle may do yachting, Gail will do railroad history including photos. Neb will write an
overview, Margaret will work on "Slippery When Wet". All articles must be submitted
by the next meeting. Paul Kreiling will be asked to design the cover.
We plan to have 300 booklets made. They will be 8 1/2 by II inches, and ads
will cost $50 for a whole page, $25 for a half page, $15 for a quarter page, and $10 for a
business card. We will try to have a bank account opened by the town comptroller for
use by the committee, particularly to deposit checks from advertising sales. The deadline
for ads is September 30 and they must be camera-ready. Gail will draft a letter to be
taken to our potential advertisers, explaining the project.
Advertising sales will be divided as follows:
Barbara - all B&Bs, motels, Aldos, and Ross's
Bob Bayley - parts of Mattituck, Bidwell and Lenz
Bob Brown - La Gazelle, Jamesport Co Kit, Hubba Hubba, Seafood Barge
Gail- The Cheese Emporium
Margaret - Southold
Merle - part of Greenport;
Mike - part of Greenport, all marinas and ferries,
Neb - Cutchogue & New Suffolk
Victor - all vineyards not otherwise assigned, Hellenic
Jeff Morgan will be asked for a portable PA system. We need two more.
A training session for the discussion leaders will be scheduled in October.
Bob Bayley will work on maps with Valerie to include in the packet for
participants. He will bring them to the next meeting.
Neb has asked the town to print letterhead for our committee.
The meeting was adjourned at 6: 15 PM.
Our next meeting will be Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 4PM, Town Hall Conference Room
Respectfully submitted,
Margaret Brown
